About Greek subtitling

Greek subtitles for an audience used to reading them

Around 13 million people speak Greek. Like much of southern and northern Europe outside the large dubbing markets, Greece subtitles foreign content rather than dubbing it, so audiences are practised readers with clear expectations about pacing and phrasing.

The technical consideration is the alphabet. Greek uses its own script, which is well supported in modern systems but still produces encoding problems in older broadcast workflows and in files passed between tools that default to Latin character sets. Greek also expands against English, so subtitle lines need condensing rather than direct translation.

At GoLocalise, we work with native Greek subtitlers and every file passes linguistic and technical QA before it is delivered.

Which do you need?

Open captions, closed captions or SDH

Three different deliverables that people often ask for by the wrong name. Here is the short version.

Open captions

Burnt in

Subtitles burnt permanently into the picture. Nobody can switch them off, which is exactly what you want for social feeds that autoplay muted — and it takes the encoding question away from the player entirely.

  • Always visible
  • Greek characters fixed at delivery
  • Delivered as a finished video file

Closed captions

Switchable

A separate file the viewer can turn on and off, and that can carry several languages at once. The standard for YouTube, Vimeo and the streaming platforms.

  • Viewer controls them
  • Multiple languages from one video
  • Indexed by search engines

SDH

Accessibility

Subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing: dialogue plus speaker IDs and the sound effects and music cues that carry meaning.

  • Speaker identification
  • Non-dialogue audio described
  • Meets accessibility requirements

Subtitles or captions? The two terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly, subtitles translate the dialogue for viewers who can hear the audio, while captions are same-language and add speaker labels and sound cues for viewers who cannot. We produce either — translated Greek subtitles or same-language Greek captions and SDH — in whichever form your platform and audience require.

How can we help you?

Your project manager has everything covered

One point of contact from brief to delivery, and both a linguistic and a technical check on every file.

1

Brief review

We review your video, your audience, and where the file is going to be published.

2

Template and translation

Where needed, we create an English subtitle template first, then send it to a native Greek subtitler.

3

Timing and quality checks

Subtitles are timed against the video and checked for reading speed, line length, character encoding, and format compliance.

4

Delivery

Your subtitle files in the format your platform requires, on budget and on time.

Our standards

The specs we work to

Readable subtitles are a matter of measurable limits, not opinion. These are the defaults we apply to Greek unless your style guide says otherwise.

42characters

Maximum per line

37 for broadcast delivery

2lines

Maximum on screen

Bottom-weighted, centred

17chars/sec

Reading speed

Minimum duration

Seven seconds maximum

Greek generally runs longer than English, which affects how much can sit in a line. Rather than raising reading speed or letting lines overflow, the subtitler condenses to fit, preserving meaning and tone within the character limit. This is standard practice in Greek subtitling, and part of why subtitling experience matters more here than general translation ability.

Greek specifics

Greece and Cyprus, and the encoding that still bites

For most content, one Greek file covers both markets. Standard Modern Greek serves Greece and Cyprus alike, and a single version reads correctly on either side.

Where it stops being enough is register. Cypriot Greek differs noticeably in speech and carries its own vocabulary, though written subtitling for Cyprus follows the standard. Where content is aimed specifically at a Cypriot audience and the register is informal, we will raise it at the brief.

The other thing to settle early is encoding for broadcast. Modern formats handle Greek without difficulty, but older broadcast workflows and legacy STL files can still mangle the character set if the encoding is not set correctly. Tell us the delivery specification at the brief stage and the files will conform to it.

Most common questions

For most content, no. Standard Modern Greek serves both, and a single file works across the two markets. Cypriot Greek differs noticeably in speech and carries its own vocabulary, but written subtitling for Cyprus follows the standard. Where content is aimed specifically at a Cypriot audience and the register is informal, we will raise it.
