About Georgian subtitling
Georgian subtitles that survive the journey to the player
Georgian is written in Mkhedruli, a script used for no other major language and one that behaves differently from Latin or Cyrillic in ways that matter for subtitling. It makes no distinction between upper and lower case, so the emphasis conventions borrowed from English subtitling simply do not apply, and font support outside Georgia is patchy enough that files regularly arrive rendering as empty boxes.
Georgian is also agglutinative, with verbs built from multiple stacked morphemes. Words run long, and long words cannot be broken across subtitle lines.

Subtitles or captions? The two terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly, subtitles translate the dialogue for viewers who can hear the audio, while captions are same-language and add speaker labels and sound cues for viewers who cannot. We produce either — translated Georgian subtitles or same-language Georgian captions and SDH — in whichever form your platform and audience require.

Georgian verbs can carry a great deal of grammatical information in a single unbreakable word, so the subtitler works to fit the meaning inside the character limit instead of pushing reading speed beyond what a viewer can comfortably follow. Condensing, not overflowing, is the job.

Georgian specifics
One script, no capitals, and fonts that give up
Around 4 million people speak Georgian, almost all of them in Georgia, where it is the official language. It is a small market with its own script and its own conventions, and very little of what works for larger European languages transfers to it.
The Mkhedruli script has no case distinction, so conventions that rely on capitals for emphasis, speaker names, or on-screen text do not transfer. Georgian subtitling uses other devices for the same purposes, and our subtitlers apply the conventions used in the market. It is worth knowing before you send a style guide written for English.
