About Malayalam subtitling
One word, two encodings, and nothing on screen to tell you
Malayalam has a set of letters called chillu: consonants that stand on their own, without a virama to suppress a vowel. They can be typed two ways. Since Unicode 5.1, published in 2008, each one has a code point of its own — ൻ is U+0D7B and nothing else. Before that the same letter was built out of three characters, the consonant, the virama and a zero-width joiner. Both are still in circulation.
On screen the two are the same word. To everything else they are different strings. A find-and-replace on a brand name catches one spelling and walks straight past the other; a glossary check passes text it should have flagged; two SRTs merged from different sources end up carrying both versions of the same word with no visible clue; and a search across a caption archive returns half of what is in it.

Subtitles or captions? The two terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly, subtitles translate the dialogue for viewers who can hear the audio, while captions are same-language and add speaker labels and sound cues for viewers who cannot. We produce either — translated Malayalam subtitles or same-language Malayalam captions and SDH — in whichever form your platform and audience require.

These four figures come from the published Malayalam subtitle guide rather than our Latin defaults: 42 characters, two lines and **22 characters a second**, dropping to 18 on children's programming. The same guide names Karthika or Nirmala as the typeface, which is worth noticing here — a font that draws only one of the two chillu forms will quietly mangle a file that happens to contain both.

Malayalam specifics
Why both spellings are correct, and both are still in use
Around 37 million people speak Malayalam as a first language and a further 810,000 as a second, on the 2011 census. It is official in Kerala, Lakshadweep and Mahé, and one of India's classical languages. The script itself was reformed in 1971: reformed orthography now carries almost all print and all primary education, while digital text uses reformed and traditional forms in roughly equal measure, because fonts exist for both.
The chillu situation is the same shape as that, one layer down. Unicode encoded six independent chillu letters at U+0D7A to U+0D7F in version 5.1 and three more in version 9.0, but the older joiner-based sequences did not stop being valid, and the standard's own guidance is that software should be ready for text in either form and that fonts should display both. Neither encoding is a mistake, which is precisely why neither of them goes away.
It is worth being clear about what this is not. The old sequence is not a corrupted file and the atomic letter is not a repair: they are two correct ways of writing the same thing, both current, both produced by tools people use every day — the keyboard layout taught in Kerala still emits the joiner form. So the job is not to fix anything. It is to pick one and hold it across the whole project, so that anything matching, sorting or searching gets a straight answer.

Most common questions
What is a chillu, and why does it matter to a subtitle file?
A chillu is a Malayalam consonant that stands alone, without a vowel and without a virama to suppress one. Nine are encoded and five are in everyday use. They matter because each can be written either as a single character or as a three-character sequence ending in a zero-width joiner, and the two are identical on screen while being completely different to any software that reads the file.
Our Malayalam search returns fewer results than it should. Why?
Almost certainly because the text holds both chillu encodings and the search matches only one of them. The two sets of results barely overlap, so a query written one way steps past every instance written the other way. Normalising the archive to a single representation fixes it, and it is the same operation we run on every Malayalam file we deliver.
Can you merge our old Malayalam subtitles with new ones?
Yes, and this is where the encoding actually bites. Files from different years and different tools tend to use different chillu forms, so a straight merge produces a programme in which the same word is spelled two ways with nothing visible to give it away. We normalise everything to one representation first, then reconcile the terminology, then time it against the picture.
Which chillu encoding should we ask for?
The atomic characters from Unicode 5.1 are the current representation and are usually the right default, but the decision belongs to the destination. If the platform font, the player or your own CMS is happier with the older joiner sequences, we deliver those and record it in the handover. What we will not do is mix them, which is the one outcome that causes real trouble downstream.
How much is Malayalam subtitling per minute?
Malayalam starts at £20 a minute of video. What shifts it: the running time, whether a transcript has to be made first, whether SDH or a burnt-in master is in the order, and how many formats are delivered. Normalising the encoding is part of the process rather than an extra line on the invoice. Every project is quoted individually, with the Price Match Promise behind it.
Do you produce Malayalam captions for Malayalam audio?
Yes, and it is a different job from translating into Malayalam. Same-language captions and SDH take footage that is already in the language and put accurate text on screen, for accessibility or for muted playback. They get exactly the same encoding treatment as translated subtitles, since a caption archive gets searched and reused the same way a subtitle file does.
We already have a Malayalam script or SRT.
Send it over. We time and spot against what you have, and the first pass is a normalisation pass, because material that has been round several tools usually carries more than one chillu representation without anybody knowing. Where there is no script we work from the Malayalam audio instead. Both routes finish with the same linguistic and technical checks.
Will the files import into our editing software?
Yes. Malayalam SRT, VTT, STL and TTML open in Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and the browser-based editors. The thing to watch is what happens afterwards: an application that re-saves the file can change the encoding on the way out, so if the text will be handled again downstream, tell us and we will check the round trip — or supply a burnt-in MP4 or MOV.
