About Dutch subtitling

Subtitles for an audience that reads them constantly

Dutch is one of the most subtitle-literate markets in Europe. Foreign content in the Netherlands and Flanders is subtitled rather than dubbed as a matter of course, which means audiences read subtitles daily and notice when they are poorly timed, awkwardly broken, or translated too literally.

The practical complication is length. Dutch expands against English much as German does, driven by compound words that cannot be broken across lines. Subtitle boxes are fixed, so the translator has to make the meaning fit rather than letting the text run.

At GoLocalise, we work with native Dutch subtitlers and every file passes linguistic and technical QA before delivery.

Which do you need?

Open captions, closed captions or SDH

Three different deliverables that people often ask for by the wrong name. Here is the short version.

Open captions

Burnt in

Subtitles burnt permanently into the picture. Nobody can switch them off, which is exactly what you want for social feeds that autoplay muted.

  • Always visible
  • Font, size, colour and position to match your brand
  • Delivered as a finished video file

Closed captions

Switchable

A separate file the viewer can turn on and off, and that can carry several languages at once. The standard for YouTube, Vimeo and the streaming platforms.

  • Viewer controls them
  • Multiple languages from one video
  • Indexed by search engines

SDH

Accessibility

Subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing: dialogue plus speaker IDs and the sound effects and music cues that carry meaning.

  • Speaker identification
  • Non-dialogue audio described
  • Meets accessibility requirements

Subtitles or captions? The two terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly, subtitles translate the dialogue for viewers who can hear the audio, while captions are same-language and add speaker labels and sound cues for viewers who cannot. We produce either — translated Dutch subtitles or same-language Dutch captions and SDH — in whichever form your platform and audience require.

How can we help you?

Your project manager has everything covered

One point of contact from brief to delivery, and both a linguistic and a technical check on every file.

1

Brief review

We review your video, your audience, and whether the content is aimed at the Netherlands, Flanders, or both.

2

Template and translation

Where needed, we create an English subtitle template first, then send it to a native Dutch subtitler.

3

Timing and quality checks

Subtitles are timed against the video and checked for reading speed, line length, and format compliance.

4

Delivery

Your subtitle files in the format your platform requires, on budget and on time.

Our standards

The specs we work to

Readable subtitles are a matter of measurable limits, not opinion. These are the defaults we apply to Dutch unless your style guide says otherwise.

42characters

Maximum per line

Compounds cannot be split to fit

2lines

Maximum on screen

Bottom-weighted, centred

17chars/sec

Reading speed

Lower for children's content

1second

Minimum duration

Seven seconds maximum

Dutch runs longer than English, and the way to handle that is by condensing rather than truncating. Dutch compound words are long and cannot be hyphenated across subtitle lines the way an English phrase can, so the subtitler works to convey the meaning within the character limit instead of letting lines overflow or reading speed climb past what a viewer can follow.

Dutch specifics

The Netherlands, Flanders, and the Flemish question

Dutch is spoken natively by around 25 million people, with roughly 30 million including second language speakers, and is official in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Suriname.

For most content you do not need two files. Standard Dutch is shared, and a single file serves both markets. The differences show up in everyday vocabulary, some idiom, and register, and they are more noticeable in dialogue-heavy or informal content than in corporate or instructional material. Where a project is aimed squarely at one market, we assign a subtitler from it.

Flemish is a separate language, spoken across Flanders in the northern half of Belgium, and we subtitle and voice it in its own right — see our Flemish voice over. It shares much of its written standard with Netherlands Dutch, but it has its own accent, vocabulary and register, so for content aimed at Flanders we produce a dedicated Flemish version rather than reusing a Netherlands-Dutch one. Tell us your target market and we assign a native subtitler from it.
