About Vietnamese subtitling

Latin script, but not the Latin script your player expects

Vietnamese is written in chữ Quốc ngữ, a Latin-based alphabet adopted officially in the early twentieth century. The language also stacks diacritics. A single vowel can carry one mark identifying the vowel itself and a second marking the tone, combining into characters such as .

In subtitle rendering with tight line spacing, the upper marks tend to get clipped, and a file that is correct in the editor can lose the information that distinguishes one word from another in the player. A missing mark is not a cosmetic problem: it changes the word.

At GoLocalise, we work with native Vietnamese subtitlers and check output in the environment it is going to play in.

Which do you need?

Open captions, closed captions or SDH

Three different deliverables that people often ask for by the wrong name. Here is the short version.

Open captions

Burnt in

Subtitles burnt permanently into the picture. Nobody can switch them off, which is exactly what you want for social feeds that autoplay muted — and it settles the diacritics at delivery instead of leaving them to the player.

  • Always visible
  • Diacritic rendering fixed at delivery
  • Delivered as a finished video file

Closed captions

Switchable

A separate file the viewer can turn on and off, and that can carry several languages at once. The standard for YouTube, Vimeo and the streaming platforms.

  • Viewer controls them
  • Multiple languages from one video
  • Indexed by search engines

SDH

Accessibility

Subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing: dialogue plus speaker IDs and the sound effects and music cues that carry meaning.

  • Speaker identification
  • Non-dialogue audio described
  • Meets accessibility requirements

Subtitles or captions? The two terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly, subtitles translate the dialogue for viewers who can hear the audio, while captions are same-language and add speaker labels and sound cues for viewers who cannot. We produce either — translated Vietnamese subtitles or same-language Vietnamese captions and SDH — in whichever form your platform and audience require.

What we subtitle

Vietnamese subtitling for every kind of content

Vietnamese subtitling runs from corporate and eLearning through to streaming and social, and every one of them ends up in a different player. These are the formats we handle most.

Corporate & training video

Internal comms, onboarding and product training subtitled for global teams and LMS delivery.

eLearning & online courses

Timed, readable subtitles for course platforms, MOOCs and instructional video.

Documentary & factual

Festival, broadcast and streaming documentaries, including interview clean-up and on-screen text.

Advertising & social

Burnt-in captions for muted autoplay on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and paid social.

Streaming & OTT

Platform-spec subtitle and caption files for VOD, OTT and broadcast delivery.

Accessibility (SDH & closed captions)

Same-language SDH and closed captions to meet WCAG and accessibility requirements.

Events, webinars & conferences

Recorded talks, town halls and webinars captioned for on-demand viewing.

E-commerce & product video

Short product and explainer videos captioned to lift conversion and reach.

How can we help you?

Your project manager has everything covered

One point of contact from brief to delivery, and both a linguistic and a technical check on every file.

1

Brief review

We review your video, your audience, and the player or platform the file has to work in.

2

Template and translation

Where needed, we create an English subtitle template first, then send it to a native Vietnamese subtitler.

3

Timing and quality checks

Subtitles are timed against the video and checked for reading speed, line length, diacritic rendering, and format compliance.

4

Delivery and display check

Files are delivered in the format you need, confirmed to display correctly.

Our standards

The specs we work to

Readable subtitles are a matter of measurable limits, not opinion. These are the defaults we apply to Vietnamese unless your style guide says otherwise.

42characters

Maximum per line

37 for broadcast delivery

2lines

Maximum on screen

Line spacing set for stacked marks

17chars/sec

Reading speed

Lower for children's content

1second

Minimum duration

Seven seconds maximum

Vietnamese also tends to use more, shorter words than English rather than fewer long ones, which affects where lines can break and how much fits comfortably in a subtitle box. The character limits above hold, but they are filled differently: a Vietnamese line reaches them across more words, and the break has to land between them rather than wherever the count runs out.

Vietnamese specifics

North and south, and what the display check actually is

For written subtitles the standard is shared and one file serves the whole country. The differences between northern and southern Vietnamese are most audible in pronunciation, with some vocabulary variation, and they matter far more for voice over than for subtitling. Where content is strongly regional in tone, we will raise it.

The check that matters more is the technical one. Because the tone and vowel marks sit above the line rather than inside it, a Vietnamese subtitle needs vertical headroom that a purely English workflow never has to think about, and the place that headroom disappears is the player, not the editor. So we look at the file where it is going to be watched: the font the platform actually substitutes, the line spacing it applies, and whether still reads as at the size your viewers will see it.
