About Romanian subtitling
Two letters that decide whether your subtitles are spelled correctly
Romanian needs ș and ț with a comma below, not the cedilla forms ş and ţ that look almost identical at subtitle size. They are not accents on an s and a t — they are ordinary letters of the alphabet, among the most frequent in the language, and getting them wrong is a spelling error on every line that contains one.
Almost every Romanian file we receive with a problem has the same one. A subtitle file saved years ago in a legacy encoding carries cedillas; a player font built for Central Europe renders the comma forms as empty boxes; and text that has been through a machine trained on diacritic-free Romanian comes back with bare s and t.

Subtitles or captions? The two terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly, subtitles translate the dialogue for viewers who can hear the audio, while captions are same-language and add speaker labels and sound cues for viewers who cannot. We produce either — translated Romanian subtitles or same-language Romanian captions and SDH — in whichever form your platform and audience require.

Romanian runs a little longer than English once articles and prepositions are enclitic on the noun, so the subtitler works to fit the meaning inside the character limit rather than pushing reading speed past what a viewer can follow. Condensing, not overflowing, is the job.

Romanian specifics
Why the wrong letters are still in circulation
The confusion has a date. ISO 8859-2, published in 1987, gave Romanian the cedilla forms, and Microsoft's CP1250 inherited that decision and carried it through every version of Windows before Vista. The comma-below characters only reached Unicode in 1999 — the same year Romania adopted them as the national standard — and a correctly encoded Romanian keyboard layout did not ship as standard until Vista. Every file produced in those two decades is a candidate for the wrong letters.
It is also why the mistake looks so plausible. ş with a cedilla is the correct letter in Turkish, and the two were treated as the same character for years, so a file can pass a spell check aimed at the wrong language and still be wrong in Romanian.
Around 22 million people speak Romanian natively, in Romania and Moldova, and it is an official language of the European Union. The reference for spelling is DOOM, published by the Romanian Academy, and that is what our subtitlers work to. Where the source material is older Moldovan or Transnistrian, it can arrive in Cyrillic — Moldova used the Cyrillic alphabet until 1989 — and we handle the conversion as part of the job.

Most common questions
Why do Romanian subtitles sometimes show the wrong ș and ț?
Because two sets of characters look almost the same. Romanian uses ș and ț with a comma below; the cedilla forms ş and ţ are a different pair that older encodings assigned to Romanian by mistake, and files produced before Windows Vista very often carry them. We deliver the comma-below characters and check them in the font your file will be played in.
My Romanian subtitles display as empty boxes. What went wrong?
Almost always the font. Romanian's five diacritic letters are spread across three different Unicode ranges, and ș and ț sit in the one that many so-called Eastern European fonts leave out — so a font can render ă and â perfectly and still fail on the other two. Tell us where the file is going to be played and we will deliver something that renders there, or supply burned-in subtitles if the environment cannot be relied on.
Can you work with Romanian material written without diacritics?
Yes, and it is common. Romanian is widely typed without diacritics, and text that has been through automatic transcription or machine translation often comes back with bare s and t. Restoring them is editorial work, not search and replace, because the correct letter depends on the word — so a native subtitler does it, and it is part of the job rather than an extra.
Do you subtitle for both Romania and Moldova?
Yes. It is the same language and the same written standard, and we follow the spelling set by the Romanian Academy. Where archive or Transnistrian source material arrives in Cyrillic, we convert it as part of the project rather than sending it back.

Absolutely. If you have a transcript or SRT we spot and time from it, checking first whether the Romanian characters survived however the file was last saved — that is where most inherited files lose their diacritics. Otherwise we transcribe the Romanian audio first. Every file gets the same linguistic and technical QA.
