It has to be retranslated, not adapted. The two share Devanagari, which is what makes the shortcut tempting, but Marathi has letters Hindi does not use and its own vocabulary and verb endings, so a converted Hindi file reads to a Marathi viewer as Hindi with the label changed. We work from your video or your Marathi transcript, and a Marathi native writes the lines.

It is a Marathi letterform written as a sequence rather than a single character: ra, virama and a zero-width joiner that holds the shape. The joiner is invisible and zero-width, so anything in the chain that normalises text or cleans out non-printing characters can remove it, and the letter changes without warning. We check for it after every conversion, which is where it usually goes missing.

Because it is the cheapest test there is. ळ is used regularly in ordinary Marathi and is not part of the Hindi alphabet, so if a whole reel of dialogue goes by without one, the file was almost certainly written for Hindi and relabelled. It takes seconds to check and it catches a problem that a reader fluent in both languages can otherwise skim straight past.

Modern standard Marathi, Praman Marathi, which is what the published Marathi subtitle guide asks for and what a Maharashtra-wide audience expects to read. Where the dialogue is strongly regional and the flavour is part of the content, we will say so at the brief and agree with you how far the written lines follow it, rather than flattening everything or guessing halfway through.

If anything the letter checks matter more on a same-language file, because a caption puts the written form of every spoken word in front of a reader who knows exactly how it should look.

We can, and it usually reduces the cost. We spot and time from what you send and read it against the audio, and the first thing we look at is whether the eyelash forms are still in it, since an inherited file has normally been through several tools already. Where no transcript exists we transcribe the Marathi audio first. Both routes get the same QA.

Worth knowing before you plan the chain: every extra tool that rewrites the text is another chance for the zero-width joiners to go, so where the route is long a burnt-in MP4 or MOV removes the risk.
