Most of its core vocabulary traces back to Latin, but centuries of contact with Slavic, Turkish, Greek and Hungarian speakers gave the language its own grammar, sounds and rhythm. Standard Romanian, the variety used in broadcasting, sits alongside regional accents from Moldavia, Transylvania and the Banat, each with its own colour and cadence.

Romanian is a Romance language in a Slavic neighbourhood, and that surprises people who cast by geography. Its grammar and core vocabulary descend from Latin, so it sits closer to Italian and Spanish than to anything spoken on its borders, while centuries of contact left a layer of Slavic borrowings on top. The practical point is that a Bulgarian, Serbian or Hungarian voice does not read Romanian, and the assumption that regional talent is interchangeable fails here more completely than almost anywhere in Europe.

The diacritics are the most common technical failure in a Romanian project, and it is a specific one. Romanian uses ș and ț — s and t with a comma below, not a cedilla. Systems that substitute the Turkish cedilla forms produce text that looks nearly right and is wrong, and Romanian readers see it immediately. It is a subtitle, on-screen-text and documentation problem rather than an audio one, and it survives to delivery precisely because it looks almost correct. Moldova speaks the same language, whatever it has been called officially at different points, and a Romanian recording serves that audience. What differs is register and some vocabulary shaped by Russian contact. If Moldova is a specific target rather than an incidental one, tell us and we will factor it into casting.

There is a very large Romanian diaspora in Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK, and content aimed at it is a different brief from content aimed at Bucharest — different practical needs, more code-switching, often a different purpose entirely. Tell us where the listener actually is.

Romanian runs longer than English, and its definite article attaches to the end of the noun rather than standing in front of it, which changes how phrases build. Timed content needs the copy adapted rather than the read hurried.

Romanian has a neuter gender, which is unusual for a Romance language and catches translators who have worked in Italian, Spanish or French. Neuter nouns behave as masculine in the singular and feminine in the plural, so agreement changes depending on the count — and a translator applying Romance instincts gets it wrong in exactly the sentences where a product is described in both singular and plural.
