Malayalam is the language of Kerala and of Lakshadweep, a Dravidian language with its own script, closely related to Tamil but distinct from it. What makes planning for Malayalam different from planning for any other Indian language is where the audience actually is.

Kerala has the highest rate of emigration to the Gulf states of any Indian state, going back to the oil boom of the 1970s — the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait all have large, long-settled Malayalam-speaking populations, including generations born and raised there. A Malayalam campaign can be aimed at Dubai as squarely as at Kochi.

That has consequences you can act on. Remittance and financial services are a major category in this language, because money moving from the Gulf back to Kerala is a significant economic flow in its own right. And the cultural reference points, the time zone and often the register all shift depending on which of the two audiences is primary. Tell us which and the brief gets sharper.

The other thing worth knowing runs against the usual advice. Kerala has the highest literacy rate in India by a clear margin, which means subtitles genuinely work in Malayalam. They are a legitimate channel rather than an accessibility fallback, and for a tight budget, subtitling is a real option here in a way it is not in every market. We would rather tell you that than sell you a recording you do not need.
