About Dutch voice over
Choosing a Dutch voice actor for the Netherlands
Dutch is a West Germanic language and the mother tongue of around 25 million people, with official status in the Netherlands, in Belgium and in Suriname. It is one of the closest living relatives of English and German, yet it carries a sound and rhythm that are entirely its own.
For audiences in the Netherlands, Netherlands Dutch is what you want, and it is what this page casts for. For Flanders, in the northern half of Belgium, we record Flemish, which we treat and deliver as its own language rather than an accent — it shares much of the written standard with Netherlands Dutch, but differs in accent, vocabulary and turn of phrase enough that a Belgian audience can tell a Netherlands recording was not made with them in mind.
A Dutch voice over also travels further than you might expect: Afrikaans-speaking audiences find Dutch largely accessible, thanks to the close relationship between the two languages.
At GoLocalise, we work with professional Dutch voice actors who record in approved studios. We stay on top of every step, from script review and casting through to editing and final delivery, to ensure the voice you go out with matches the audience and content you are producing for.
Dutch audiences are famously direct, and that is a copy problem before it is a voice problem. Marketing language that reads as normal enthusiasm in English — «amazing», «revolutionary», «we're passionate about» — lands in Dutch as overclaiming, and overclaiming reads as untrustworthy rather than energetic. Translated literally, an English campaign frequently arrives sounding like it is trying too hard. The fix is adapting the claims, not asking the voice actor to dial back the delivery. We flag this at script review, because it is the single most common reason a Dutch version underperforms the English one.
Nearly everyone in the Netherlands speaks excellent English, which cuts both ways. It means English terms sit naturally in Dutch copy and nobody blinks at them. It also means your Dutch audience is fluent enough to notice exactly how good or bad the Dutch is, and to compare it unfavourably with the original if the Dutch version feels like an afterthought. A weak Dutch read is not a neutral outcome here; it is worse than no Dutch version at all.
Dutch and Flemish are the same language on paper and different in the ear. A voice from the Netherlands is understood perfectly in Flanders and marked as foreign within a sentence, and the reverse is also true. Vocabulary differs in ordinary words that turn up in ordinary scripts. If your campaign covers both the Netherlands and Belgium, that is two recordings, and we would rather tell you now than have it come back after the launch.
«Je» or «u» sets the whole relationship, and Dutch brands have moved decisively towards the informal over the last two decades — but not uniformly. Financial services, insurance, healthcare and government still lean formal, and using «je» there reads as careless rather than modern. Consumer, tech and retail are almost entirely informal. It runs through every sentence, so it is decided in the writing.
Dutch runs longer than English, and it stacks compounds in a way that affects phrasing rather than just length. A script timed to English and handed over unadapted forces the reader to choose between overrunning and rushing the compounds, which is where a read starts to sound mechanical. We adapt for timing as part of the job.
Send us the English original as well as the Dutch translation, if you have both. That is the fastest way for us to spot claims that have travelled badly, and we do it without charging for it. You get an itemised quote, a note on anything that reads as overclaiming, and a free casting of Dutch voices recorded on your own script. [Request a Dutch voice over quote](/get-a-quote?help=Dutch%20voice%20over), or share the outline and we will come back to you with a shortlist and honest advice on whether you also need a Flemish version.

Instructional video · DutchMetropolis Studios and FileMaker
FileMaker, a renowned software company, needed localisation expertise for a marketing initiative. Working with a London-based production company, we were selected to translate, adapt and voice a series of instructional videos for several European markets.
The project covered eight English-language videos localised into French, Italian, German, European Spanish and Dutch. Our contribution focused on the Dutch version.
Our coordinators sourced custom voice samples from our pool of Dutch artists so the client could choose from real reads rather than generic demos. We then invited the client into the studio for the Dutch sessions, giving them live feedback and direction, and brought in Dutch language directors to guarantee linguistic accuracy. Having the producers on site meant swift decisions on script adjustments and precise syncing with the video.

“The project culminated in a series of polished localised videos for FileMaker, solidifying their satisfaction with our services. The success of this collaboration has already sparked the commencement of subsequent projects.”

Most common questions
Why does our Dutch translation sound like it is trying too hard?
Almost always because the claims travelled literally. Marketing language that reads as ordinary enthusiasm in English — amazing, revolutionary, passionate — lands in Dutch as overclaiming, and Dutch audiences read overclaiming as untrustworthy. It is a copy problem, not a delivery one, so a different voice actor will not fix it. Send us the English alongside the Dutch and we will mark the lines that need rethinking, free.
Do we need separate Dutch and Flemish recordings?
If the campaign runs in both the Netherlands and Belgium, yes. The written language is close to identical but the accent and a good deal of everyday vocabulary are not, and each audience marks the other as foreign within a sentence. We would rather flag it before you record than after the launch. Tell us the markets and we will quote both.
Should the Dutch script use je or u?
It depends on the sector rather than the era. Dutch brands have moved strongly towards the informal je, but financial services, insurance, healthcare and government still lean towards u, and getting it wrong there reads as careless. It runs through every sentence, so it is settled in the writing rather than adjusted in the booth.
Which type of Dutch voice do I need?
It depends on where your audience is. Netherlands Dutch is the default for campaigns aimed at the Dutch market. For viewers in Flanders we record Flemish, which we treat as its own language with its own voice actors, because the differences in accent and phrasing are easy for a Belgian audience to spot. If the campaign runs across both markets, we can advise on which version travels better, or deliver two recordings.
Is Flemish a separate language from Dutch?
Yes. Flemish is spoken across Flanders, in the northern half of Belgium, and we treat and deliver it as its own language, with native Flemish voice actors of its own. It shares much of its written standard with Netherlands Dutch, but has its own accent, vocabulary and register, so for content aimed at Flanders we produce a dedicated Flemish recording rather than reusing a Netherlands-Dutch one. Tell us your audience and we'll match it.
How quickly can a Dutch voice-over project be delivered?
Most short projects are delivered within 24 to 48 hours, though the exact turnaround depends on script length and talent availability. At the start of your project, your project manager will confirm the timeline.
Will the Dutch recording match the length of my English original?
Not usually. Dutch typically runs 5 to 15% longer than English once recorded, which matters when the audio has to sit against existing video, so we review the script for timing before the session. It is worth getting right: Dutch audiences are famously comfortable in English and a translated-sounding read gets noticed immediately.
Can I request revisions after the initial recording?
Yes. We understand that revisions may be necessary and offer a reasonable number of them to ensure your satisfaction. Script changes, however, may incur additional costs.
How much does a Dutch voice over cost?
There is a question worth asking before you commission Dutch at all, and we would rather raise it than take the booking quietly: English proficiency in the Netherlands is among the highest in the world, and for some B2B and technical audiences an English original genuinely performs as well. Where it does not — consumer advertising, public information, anything asking for trust — Dutch is not optional. We will give you our honest read. The price is a session fee plus a usage licence, itemised, with our Price Match Promise.
What file formats do you deliver Dutch voice overs in?
We deliver Dutch voice over in whatever format you need — WAV, MP3, AIFF and more — at broadcast specifications, as separate files or a single mix, ready to drop straight into your project.
What do you use Dutch voice over for?
Common projects include e-learning and corporate video, TV and radio commercials, video games and IVR for audiences in the Netherlands. For Flanders we cast native Flemish voices instead. Tell us the brief and we'll match it.
