It is written in its own alphabet, created by Mesrop Mashtots in 405 AD and in continuous use ever since. Two standard varieties are in active use: Eastern Armenian, the official language of Armenia, and Western Armenian, the language of much of the diaspora, differing in pronunciation, some grammar and vocabulary.
