Bulgarian attaches the definite article to the end of the noun, and masculine singular nouns have two forms of it: the full article (-ът, -ят) when the noun is the subject, the short article (-а, -я) when it is an object or follows a preposition. The two sound almost identical, so a transcriber has to work it out from the sentence rather than the recording. It is the most frequent error in written Bulgarian, and the first thing a native reader checks.

A Russian speaker will recognise the alphabet and some vocabulary and not much else — the grammar is entirely different and the article rule does not exist in Russian.
