Where Kyrgyz is spoken and how it is written
Kyrgyz is spoken by around 5 to 6 million people, mainly in Kyrgyzstan, and by a further 204,402 counted in China at the 2020 census.
Kyrgyz is the state language of Kyrgyzstan, with Russian holding official status alongside it; language policy is overseen by the National Commission for the State Language and Language Policy. A constitutional law on the state language took effect on 28 July 2023, requiring Kyrgyz across state institutions and setting a floor of 60% Kyrgyz-language output for all broadcasters.

Kyrgyz specifics
A Kyrgyz transcript can read impeccably and still be wrong, because nothing in the recording tells you which alphabet — or which of two official languages — the page should be in
Kyrgyz speech is written in Cyrillic in Kyrgyzstan and in Perso-Arabic in Kizilsu in China, and a third option is live but undecided: the Organization of Turkic States settled a 34-letter common Latin alphabet in September 2024, with Kyrgyzstan the one member that has not signed up to a switch. That is a policy choice about the reader, and a person has to make it before transcription begins.
The second decision sits inside almost every Kyrgyzstan recording. Russian is co-official, and in Bishkek a 2020 survey found 55.6% of the population speaking Russian at home against 43.6% for Kyrgyz, so speakers move between the two mid-sentence.
A transcriber has to decide, word by word, whether a Russian item is quoted Russian to be set in Russian orthography or a naturalised borrowing to be spelled Kyrgyz.
That is a live question, because letters such as в, ф, ц and щ, along with the hard and soft signs, enter Kyrgyz essentially only with Russian words.

Most common questions
Which alphabet will our Kyrgyz transcript be in?
Cyrillic by default, because that is what Kyrgyzstan uses and the state language is being developed in it. If the readership is the Kyrgyz community in Kizilsu in Xinjiang, the Perso-Arabic script is the one in official use there. Latin is worth raising only if you are aligning with the Common Turkic Alphabet agreed in 2024, which Kyrgyzstan has not adopted.
Half our recording is in Russian. Is that still a Kyrgyz transcription?
It is a bilingual one, and it should be quoted as such. Russian is an official language in Kyrgyzstan and switching is normal — in Bishkek more people reported speaking Russian at home than Kyrgyz in a 2020 survey. Tell us whether you want Russian stretches kept in Russian orthography or rendered in Kyrgyz, because that choice changes the file.
Our Kyrgyz file has н and о where the speaker clearly said something else. What happened?
Kyrgyz Cyrillic adds three letters to the Russian set — ң, ү and ө — and they carry real contrasts. When material is produced on Russian keyboards or by tools set to Russian, those letters get flattened to н, у and о, which reads as plausible Kyrgyz but is not the word that was spoken.
