About Mongolian transcription
Where Mongolian is spoken and how it is written
Mongolian is spoken by around 5 million people across its varieties, in Mongolia, where Khalkha is the statutory national language under the 1992 Constitution, and in Inner Mongolia in China.
The Mongolian Language Law, in force since 1 July 2015, and the National Programme for Mongolian Script III, approved in March 2020, add the traditional script to Cyrillic without replacing it: since 1 January 2025, state and local government correspondence and documents such as identity cards, birth and marriage certificates and academic qualifications must appear in both. Mongolia's standard is based on Khalkha; Inner Mongolia's on Chakhar.

Who hears your Mongolian audio
Mongolian transcription often means board material from a head office in the head office, arbitration, pre-release production audio or research interviews recorded on the understanding they stay private. So who hears it matters as much as how accurately it is captured.

Mongolian specifics
A Mongolian transcript can read perfectly and still be the wrong document, because in Mongolian the script is not formatting — it is a second spelling system
Mongolia writes in Cyrillic; Inner Mongolia writes in the traditional vertical script; and since January 2025 Mongolian law requires the state to use both in official correspondence and on identity, civil-status and education documents, with no provision terminating Cyrillic.
Re-typing a Cyrillic transcript into the traditional script is not transliteration, because the traditional orthography records a much older stage of the language. Adapted from Old Uyghur, it does not distinguish o from u, ö from ü, final a from e, or syllable-initial t from d and k from g. Deciding which of those a given word takes means knowing the word, not the sound.
The two standards also diverge in vocabulary, Mongolia drawing loanwords from Russian and Inner Mongolia from Chinese, so a transcriber trained on one may not have the other's everyday terms.
The practical consequence is that script and standard have to be specified with the job, and a file produced for one side of the border is not converted into the other by software.

Most common questions
Cyrillic or the traditional Mongolian script?
It depends on where the transcript will be used. Mongolia's everyday written language is Cyrillic, but since 1 January 2025 state and local government correspondence and several categories of official document must appear in both Cyrillic and the traditional script. Material intended for Inner Mongolia is normally expected in the traditional script only.
Can you convert my existing Cyrillic transcript into the traditional script?
Only with a linguist in the loop. The traditional orthography preserves distinctions and mergers from an older stage of the language and does not separate o from u, ö from ü, or initial t from d and k from g, so a converter has to resolve ambiguities that the Cyrillic source does not settle. Vowel harmony and context resolve many of them, but not all.
My recording is from Inner Mongolia. Can a transcriber in Ulaanbaatar handle it?
Often, but do not assume it. The standard written variety in Inner Mongolia is based on Chakhar rather than Khalkha, the script is the traditional one, and everyday loanwords come from Chinese where Mongolia's come from Russian. We assign the file to a transcriber from the right side of that split, and we ask you which one it is rather than inferring it from the language name.
