Farsi specifics
One name, three standards, two alphabets
Persian is a pluricentric language: around 130 million speakers worldwide across three mutually intelligible standard varieties — Iranian Persian (Farsi), Afghan Persian (Dari) and Tajik. It is written in the Perso-Arabic script in Iran and Afghanistan, and in Cyrillic in Tajikistan.
For a transcript that is not background trivia, it is the deliverable. The variety decides the script your document comes back in, and a transcript that does not account for the variety, the script and the register reads as wrong to a native reader, however accurate the individual words are.
We transcribe Iranian Persian, and we handle Dari as its own language with its own native linguists rather than as a regional flavour of Farsi — the two are close, but they are not interchangeable, as we set out in our guide to the differences between Pashto, Dari and Farsi. Most projects for an Iranian audience call for standard Iranian Persian, written in the Perso-Arabic script. Content for Afghan audiences is better served by Dari, which we handle as its own language with its own linguists rather than as a variant of Farsi.
