About Bhojpuri transcription

Find the right Bhojpuri transcription for your project

Bhojpuri is an Indo-Aryan language of the Hindi belt, spoken across Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal, and the language behind one of India's largest regional film and music industries. It is written in Devanagari.

It is also one of the very few South Asian languages that emigrated and stayed. Carried by nineteenth-century indentured migration, it took root in Mauritius, Fiji, the Caribbean and South Africa, and the varieties that grew up there are living community languages rather than remnants.

So the first question on a Bhojpuri brief is geographic. At GoLocalise, we work with native Bhojpuri transcribers matched to where the audio was actually recorded, with a project manager across every step from briefing through to proofreading, time-coding and final delivery.

Choose your format

Three ways to transcribe the same recording

The right one depends on what the transcript is for. If you are not sure, tell us the use case and we will recommend it.

Full verbatim

Every word

Records every spoken detail, including pauses, filler words, repetitions and hesitations, exactly as they occur.

Best for

Oral histories, research interviews, dialogue lists for rights work

Edited

Clean read

Removes redundant words and hesitations while keeping the meaning and the speaker's intent fully intact.

Best for

Broadcast material, interviews for publication, content to be subtitled

Summarised

Key points

Condenses the discussion into structured key points rather than a full record of the conversation.

Best for

Programme documentation, catalogue records, internal briefings

What's included

What comes with every Bhojpuri transcript

Matched to the recording's origin

Bihar and eastern UP, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad, Guyana or Suriname — assigned on where the audio was made rather than on the label attached to the file.

Local vocabulary kept, not smoothed

Overseas varieties carry Creole, French, English and Dutch loanwords. A transcriber who doesn't recognise them normalises them, and the record quietly changes.

A consistent spelling convention

Bhojpuri has no fixed modern standard, so the decisions are agreed once and applied to every file in the project.

Timecodes

Stamped at the interval you need — per speaker turn, per paragraph or at fixed intervals.

Speaker identification

Every turn attributed, by name where you supply them or by role where you don't.

Your format

Word, PDF, plain text, Excel or a subtitle-ready file — tell us the next step.

How it works

One project manager, from brief to delivery

A structured workflow, built so accuracy and confidentiality are verified at each stage rather than assumed at the end.

1

Brief review

We review your audio, the subject matter, any speaker lists and your target output — starting with where the recording was made.

2

Transcriber assignment

We match your project to a native Bhojpuri transcriber from the right region, with the right subject expertise, whether media and archive work, research or community material.

3

Transcription & quality check

The transcript is produced and checked against the source audio, with speaker labels, timestamps and any required formatting applied.

4

Delivery

Clean, time-coded transcripts in your chosen format, on budget and on time.

Tell us where the audio comes from before anything else. It is one line in an email at the briefing stage and a re-do if it surfaces later.

Who we work with

Industries that rely on Bhojpuri transcription

Most Bhojpuri work reaches us from media and archives rather than from advertising. These are the briefs we see most.

Film & music

Dialogue lists, lyric transcription, catalogue records and archive material from one of India's largest regional industries.

Academic & research

Oral histories and fieldwork, including indenture-era community research across Mauritius, Fiji and the Caribbean.

Government & development

Community consultations, NGO programme records and rural outreach material.

Archives & heritage

Recorded performance, folklore collections and diaspora documentation projects.

Health & education

Community health recordings, training material and classroom content.

Legal

Statements and case material where a speaker uses Bhojpuri rather than standard Hindi.

Confidentiality

Who hears your Bhojpuri audio

Bhojpuri audio is often unreleased media material, family and community oral history, or research interviews recorded on specific terms. So who hears it matters as much as how accurately it is captured.

Your files are uploaded through an encrypted system, handled by a named Bhojpuri transcriber under NDA, and never fed into public speech-to-text tools. We will sign your own confidentiality agreement, follow your retention rules, and delete everything on delivery if your policy requires it.

Encrypted upload

No loose files over email.

NDA as standard

Yours or ours, before we start.

No public AI tools

Your audio never trains anything.

Deletion on request

Files removed on delivery if you need it.

Bhojpuri specifics

"Bhojpuri" tells us the language. It does not tell us the country.

Bhojpuri travelled with nineteenth-century indentured migration and put down roots a long way from Bihar. Mauritian Bhojpuri grew up among the descendants of labourers who arrived between 1834 and 1910, absorbed French-based Mauritian Creole, and is recognised by the government and taught at university there. Fiji Hindi, an official language of Fiji, rests on Bhojpuri and Awadhi together and carries Fijian and English vocabulary. Caribbean Hindustani, of which Suriname's Sarnami is one variety, is spoken in Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. There is South African Bhojpuri as well.

For transcription that is a casting problem, not a curiosity. A transcriber from Bihar handed a recording made in Port of Spain or Port Louis will follow the grammar and the core vocabulary comfortably and will not recognise the local loanwords — and what a transcriber does not recognise, they normalise. They write the word they expected to hear. On an oral history or a research recording, that is the precise place where the interesting material lives, and it disappears without leaving a mark.

Two practical notes to close. Like Awadhi, Bhojpuri has no fixed modern spelling standard, so we agree conventions at the start and apply them across the project rather than deciding word by word. And a good deal of Bhojpuri work is media and archive material — dialogue lists, lyric transcription, catalogue records for a film and music industry that produces at scale — where the transcript feeds subtitling or rights work rather than being the end product. Tell us the next step and we will format for it.

Most common questions

Why does it matter where the recording was made?

Because Bhojpuri exists in several places and has developed differently in each. Alongside Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal, there is Mauritian Bhojpuri, South African Bhojpuri, Caribbean Hindustani across Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica and Trinidad, and Fiji Hindi. Those varieties carry local vocabulary a transcriber from Bihar has never heard, and unfamiliar words tend to get quietly replaced with familiar ones.

Is Fiji Hindi the same thing as Bhojpuri?

Not the same, but closely connected. Fiji Hindi is an official language of Fiji and rests on both Bhojpuri and Awadhi, with Fijian and English vocabulary layered on top. A Bhojpuri speaker follows a great deal of it. For a transcript, though, following most of it is not the standard — so if your audio is from Fiji, tell us and we will assign accordingly.

What happens if the wrong transcriber is assigned?

Usually nothing that looks like an error. The grammar and core vocabulary are shared, so the transcript reads fluently. What goes missing are the local terms — the Creole, French, English or Dutch borrowings that a Bihar-based transcriber does not recognise and therefore normalises into something expected. On oral history and research recordings that is exactly the material the project was collecting.

Can you transcribe Bhojpuri film dialogue and song lyrics?

Yes, and it is a large part of the Bhojpuri work we do. Dialogue lists, lyric transcription, catalogue records and archive material all come with their own formatting requirements depending on whether they feed subtitling, rights clearance or a catalogue system. Tell us what the file is for and we will deliver it in the shape the next step needs.

Does Bhojpuri have a standard spelling?

Not a settled modern one. It is written in Devanagari, and words that could reasonably be spelled more than one way come up constantly. We agree the conventions at the start of a project and apply them to every file, so a long transcript or a multi-file archive stays internally consistent and can actually be searched.

Can a Hindi transcriber cover Bhojpuri?

We don't work that way. Bhojpuri is frequently counted under Hindi in census returns, which encourages the assumption, but it is a distinct language with its own grammar and vocabulary. A Hindi transcriber produces an approximation that reads plausibly and diverges from what was said, which is the hardest kind of error to catch afterwards.

How quickly can a Bhojpuri transcription project be delivered?

Most short projects are delivered within 24 to 48 hours, but the exact turnaround depends on audio length, audio quality and whether time-coding is required. Recordings from the overseas communities can take a little longer to schedule because the pool is smaller, which is another reason to tell us the origin early. Your project manager will confirm the timeline.

Is my audio kept confidential?

Yes. Files are uploaded through an encrypted system, handled by a named transcriber under NDA, and never fed into public speech-to-text tools. We can sign your own confidentiality agreement, work to your retention rules and delete everything on delivery.

What formats do you deliver Bhojpuri transcripts in?

Word, PDF, plain text, Excel or a subtitle-ready file, with timecodes and speaker labels where you need them. Tell us what the transcript is for and we will deliver it in the format the next step requires.
