About Sundanese transcription
Where Sundanese is spoken and how it is written
Sundanese is spoken natively by around 32 to 34 million people, in West Java and Banten and in parts of central Java. It is a separate language from Javanese, with its own ISO 639-3 code, `sun`.
Standardisation rests with Indonesia's Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa nationally and with the Lembaga Basa jeung Sastra Sunda regionally. The decisive event is the 1988 Sundanese Language Congress in Bogor, which reduced the system of speech levels from six grades to two, basa hormat and basa loma, and renamed the concept tatakrama basa.

Sundanese specifics
A Sundanese transcript can read perfectly and still be wrong, because the written standard is not the register people speak in
Since the 1988 Sundanese Language Congress, the written standard for newspapers, magazines and books has been basa loma, the neutral and familiar register. Recordings are not made in basa loma; they are made in whatever register the speakers' relationship calls for.
The refined register is lexically separate, so imah 'house' becomes rorompok when it is the speaker's own and bumi when it belongs to the person being addressed, just as dahar 'eat' becomes neda about oneself and tuang about someone else.
The pull towards the written standard is therefore constant, and a transcriber who follows it produces a document that looks like correct written Sundanese and has flattened the deference out of the audio.
Worse, because the refined vocabulary is split by whom the word refers to rather than by how polite the speaker is being, swapping one of those forms for another does not make the sentence less polite — it reverses who is being honoured. Deciding, utterance by utterance, to write the form that was spoken rather than the form the style guide prefers is what a native Sundanese transcriber is for.

Most common questions
Is Sundanese a dialect of Javanese or of Indonesian?
No. Sundanese is a separate language with its own ISO 639-3 code, sun, distinct from Javanese jav and Indonesian ind, and it has its own standardising body, the Lembaga Basa jeung Sastra Sunda. A recording made in West Java or Banten is likely to be Sundanese rather than Javanese, and a Javanese transcriber cannot work on it.
Why does the transcript keep different words for the same thing?
Because Sundanese chooses the refined word according to whom it refers to. Rorompok is one's own house and bumi is the house of the person being addressed; neda is oneself eating and tuang is someone else eating. These are not inconsistencies in the transcript — swapping them would change who is being shown respect.
Can the transcript be delivered in Sundanese script?
Yes. Aksara Sunda Baku was made official in West Java by governor's decree in 1999 and encoded in Unicode 5.1 in April 2008, and it appears today on street signage in Bandung and Bogor. In practice it is used for cultural and ceremonial purposes, so the default delivery is Latin script unless you ask otherwise.
