About Albanian transcription

Find the right Albanian transcriber for your project

Albanian, or shqip, is an independent branch of the Indo-European language family with no close living relatives. It is spoken natively by around 5 million people, primarily in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and parts of Montenegro and Serbia.

The language has two main dialects: Gheg in the north and Tosk in the south, with standard Albanian built on the Tosk base. The 36-letter Latin alphabet, fixed at the Congress of Manastir in 1908, includes letters and sound combinations with no direct equivalent in English.

At GoLocalise, we work with native Albanian transcribers and a project manager who keeps every step on track, from brief and file intake through to time-coding, formatting and final delivery.

Choose your format

Three ways to transcribe the same recording

The right one depends on what the transcript is for. If you are not sure, tell us the use case and we will recommend it.

Full verbatim

Every word

Records every spoken detail, including pauses, filler words, repetitions and hesitations, exactly as they occur.

Best for

Legal proceedings, research interviews, focus groups

Edited

Clean read

Removes redundant words and hesitations while keeping the meaning and the speaker's intent fully intact.

Best for

Corporate meetings, interviews for publication, content to be translated

Summarised

Key points

Condenses the discussion into structured key points rather than a full record of the conversation.

Best for

Executive briefings, legal summaries, research documentation

What's included

What comes with every Albanian transcript

Albanian, English, or both

A source transcript, an English translation, or the two side by side. For legal and compliance work the two-step route leaves you a verifiable source-language record alongside the English.

The alphabet handled properly

All 36 letters and the digraphs set correctly, including the ë that changes meaning when it is dropped.

Timecodes

Stamped at the interval you need — per speaker turn, per paragraph or at fixed intervals.

Speaker identification

Every turn attributed, by name where you supply them or by role where you don't.

Proofreading pass

A second native linguist checks the transcript against the audio before it reaches you.

Your format

Word, PDF, plain text, Excel or a subtitle-ready file — tell us the next step.

How it works

One project manager, from brief to delivery

A structured workflow, built so accuracy and confidentiality are verified at each stage rather than assumed at the end.

1

Brief review

We review your audio, style notes and target audience, so we have everything needed for a well-planned delivery.

2

Transcriber selection

We search our Albanian linguist database and send you a shortlist in the register you need, whether formal, conversational or legal.

3

Transcription & production

Once you have chosen your transcriber, we schedule the work, manage the session and handle all editing, time-coding and quality checks.

4

Delivery

Proofread transcripts in your chosen format, on budget and on time.

If the audio moves between Gheg and Tosk, or between Albania and Kosovo, tell us up front and we assign accordingly rather than discovering it mid-project.

Who we work with

Industries that rely on Albanian transcription

In some sectors a documented record is a compliance requirement, in others an accessibility one. These are the briefs we see most.

Legal & immigration

Hearings, statements and case material, transcribed verbatim and formatted to requirement.

NGO & public sector

Programme material, community outreach and public information across the region.

Academic & research

Field interviews, oral histories and research recordings.

Broadcast & media

News, interviews and documentaries, with subtitle-ready templates.

Market research

Focus groups and interviews across Albania, Kosovo and the diaspora.

Corporate

Board meetings, negotiations and training material.

Confidentiality

Who hears your Albanian audio

Albanian transcription often means legal statements, asylum and immigration material or interviews recorded with people who have good reason to expect discretion. So who hears it matters as much as how accurately it is captured.

Your files are uploaded through an encrypted system, handled by a named Albanian transcriber under NDA, and never fed into public speech-to-text tools. We will sign your own confidentiality agreement, follow your retention rules, and delete everything on delivery if your policy requires it.

Encrypted upload

No loose files over email.

NDA as standard

Yours or ours, before we start.

No public AI tools

Your audio never trains anything.

Deletion on request

Files removed on delivery if you need it.

Albanian specifics

There is no neighbouring language to fall back on

Albanian sits on its own branch of the Indo-European family, with no close living relatives. That is not a piece of trivia for a transcriber: with Czech and Slovak, or Dutch and Afrikaans, an ear trained on one language carries a long way into the other. With Albanian there is nothing adjacent to lean on. Either the linguist knows the language or the transcript starts guessing.

The detail is where it shows. A non-native ear can mishear vowel length, confuse palatal and velar consonants, or miss the difference between ë and e — a difference that changes what a word means, not just how it looks. Automated tools drop the ë routinely, and the result reads as fluent Albanian that says something else.

So the choice of linguist is a real decision. Standard Albanian, built on the Tosk base, is understood across the whole language area and suits most corporate, broadcast and legal work. Gheg fits material recorded in Kosovo or northern Albania, where it is what people actually speak. Send us a sample and we will tell you what is on the recording before you commit.

Most common questions

Most projects work well with standard Albanian, based on the Tosk dialect and understood across the whole language area. Where the content calls for it, Gheg suits material recorded in Kosovo or northern Albania, where speakers use that dialect in everyday speech. Your project manager will confirm which fits your audience.
