About Irish transcription
Where Irish is spoken and how it is written
In the Republic of Ireland, around 1.87 million people aged 3 and over reported being able to speak Irish in the April 2022 census, of whom around 72,000 spoke it daily outside the education system. In Northern Ireland, around 228,600 people reported some ability at the 2021 census.
Irish is the first official language of the Republic of Ireland and has been a full official and working language of the European Union since 1 January 2022. The written standard, An Caighdeán Oifigiúil, is maintained by Rannóg an Aistriúcháin of the Houses of the Oireachtas; the current revision is dated 2017.

Who hears your Irish audio
Irish transcription often means board material from a head office in the head office, arbitration, pre-release production audio or research interviews recorded on the understanding they stay private. So who hears it matters as much as how accurately it is captured.

Irish specifics
An Irish transcript can read impeccably and still be wrong, because Irish has an official written standard that was never written for speech
An Caighdeán Oifigiúil states its own limit in its introduction: it is not an official standard for the spoken language, and recognising certain forms does not invalidate or prohibit other correct forms.
So when a Gaeltacht speaker is recorded, the standard does not tell the transcriber what to write.
Dialect is not only accent. Ulster speech negates with cha and chan where the standard uses ní, says fosta for freisin, caidé for cad é, and molann muid where the standard has the synthetic molaimid. Normalising those into the Caighdeán changes the words on the page, not just their spelling, and a reader can no longer tell what was said.
The decision — verbatim dialect, or standardised text — is an editorial one that has to be taken before work starts, because it cannot be reversed from the finished file.

Most common questions
Will the transcript follow An Caighdeán Oifigiúil or the speaker's dialect?
Both are defensible, and we agree it in advance. The Official Standard governs legislation and official writing, but its own introduction says it is not a standard for speech and does not prohibit other correct forms. For research, oral history and legal material we normally keep dialect forms; for publication and official use we normally standardise, and we record which convention was applied.
Does a Donegal recording need a different transcriber from a Kerry one?
For close, fast Gaeltacht speech, usually yes. Ulster Irish differs from the other dialects in grammar and everyday vocabulary, not only in pronunciation — the negative particle, pronoun forms and common adverbs are not the same — and a transcriber working outside their own dialect will mis-hear exactly the high-frequency words that carry the meaning.
How is English inside Irish speech handled?
Bilingual speakers switch into English mid-sentence. We keep the English as spoken and mark it, rather than translating it into Irish, because a code-switch is evidence about the speaker; the alternative would silently put Irish words into someone's mouth.
