About Hungarian transcription

Where Hungarian is spoken and how it is written

Hungarian is spoken natively by around 13 million people (Ethnologue), principally in Hungary, with recognised minority communities in neighbouring Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine. Its spelling is set by the Hungarian Language Committee, in A magyar helyesírás szabályai, the official rulebook.

Hungarian builds long compound words freely, joining nouns, adjectives and modifiers into a single written word far more often than English does, which changes how a compound is meant to break on the page as much as how it sounds.

At GoLocalise, we work with professional Hungarian transcribers who are native speakers, and we manage every step — file intake and brief, transcription, time-coding, formatting and final delivery — so the transcript you receive is accurate to the audio and ready for its intended use.

Choose your format

Three ways to transcribe the same recording

The right one depends on what the transcript is for. If you are not sure, tell us the use case and we will recommend it.

Full verbatim

Every word

Captures every utterance, pause and non-standard pronunciation exactly as spoken, including false starts and overlap.

Best for

Legal proceedings, research interviews, compliance content

Clean read

Edited

Removes filler words, false starts and repeated phrases for readability, while keeping meaning and speaker intent intact.

Best for

Corporate video, interviews for publication, content to be translated

Summarised

Key points

Condenses the discussion into structured key points rather than a full record of the conversation.

Best for

Executive briefings, legal summaries, research documentation

What's included

What comes with every Hungarian transcript

Hungarian, English, or both

A source transcript, an English translation, or the two side by side. The translation is produced from the original audio, not from the transcript alone.

Timecodes

Stamped at the interval you need — per speaker turn, per paragraph or at fixed intervals, matched to your edit or subtitle workflow.

Speaker identification

Every turn attributed, by name where you supply them or by role where you don't — including through overlap.

Proofreading pass

A second native Hungarian linguist reads the transcript against the audio before it reaches you.

Terminology kept

Legal, medical or technical vocabulary rendered to the convention your sector uses, not paraphrased.

Your format

Plain text, Word, PDF, SRT, VTT or a client-specific template — tell us the next step.

How it works

One project manager, from brief to delivery

A structured workflow, built so accuracy and confidentiality are verified at each stage rather than assumed at the end.

1

File intake and brief

We review your audio or video, confirm the transcript type (verbatim, clean read, time-coded), and note any terminology, speaker labels or formatting you need.

2

Transcriber assignment

We match your content to a native Hungarian transcriber with the right background, whether legal, medical, corporate or media.

3

Transcription and QA

The transcriber works directly from your files. A second linguist reviews the transcript against the audio for accuracy, speaker identification and consistency.

4

Delivery

Formatted transcripts in your chosen format, whether plain text, SRT, VTT or a client-specific template, on budget and on time.

For multi-speaker research, hearings or archive projects, we assign a coordinated team and agree milestones up front.

Who we work with

Industries that rely on Hungarian transcription

A written record is a compliance requirement in some sectors and an accessibility one in others. These are the Hungarian briefs we see most.

Legal & compliance

Hearings, depositions and arbitration, transcribed verbatim and formatted to requirement.

Automotive & electronics

Technical briefings, supplier negotiations and training material.

Broadcast & media

Interviews, documentaries and archive footage, with subtitle-ready templates.

Market research

Focus groups and interviews, including sessions with heavy speaker overlap.

Business & shared services

Client calls, process documentation and training material.

Academic & research

Lectures, field interviews and research material.

Confidentiality

Who hears your Hungarian audio

Hungarian transcription often means board material from a head office in Budapest, arbitration, pre-release production audio or research interviews recorded on the understanding they stay private. So who hears it matters as much as how accurately it is captured.

Your files are uploaded through an encrypted system, handled by a named Hungarian transcriber under NDA, and never fed into public speech-to-text tools. We will sign your own confidentiality agreement, follow your retention rules, and delete everything on delivery if your policy requires it.

Encrypted upload

No loose files over email.

NDA as standard

Yours or ours, before we start.

No public AI tools

Your audio never trains anything.

Deletion on request

Files removed on delivery if you need it.

Hungarian specifics

A Hungarian compound word is one thing until the transcriber counts to seven

Hungarian builds compounds by joining elements into a single written word, and for most of them that is the end of the decision. But once a compound has more than two elements and more than six syllables, the rule changes: it takes a hyphen at the join between its two main parts instead of running on solid. The threshold is set by the Hungarian Language Committee, the country's spelling authority, in A magyar helyesírás szabályai, and confirmed on the Committee's own advisory site — a compound of only two elements, however long, is exempt regardless of its syllable count.

None of that is available from the recording. Spoken Hungarian gives no pause, stress shift or acoustic marker at the point where the hyphen belongs — the six-syllable, three-element threshold is a count, not a sound, and it is the transcriber who has to run it on every long compound as it is written down. Get the count wrong by one syllable and the word is spelled incorrectly for any Hungarian reader, even though the audio never suggested there was a decision to make.

So a Hungarian transcript is written by a native transcriber trained to make that count as a matter of course, and a second linguist checks it against the written rule before delivery. Send us a sample and we will tell you what we are hearing before you commit.

Most common questions

Which Hungarian transcription format should I ask for?

Clean read suits corporate video, interviews for publication and anything heading for translation: filler words and false starts come out, meaning stays. Verbatim is what legal proceedings, compliance material and research interviews need, because every utterance and pause is on the record. Either way, long compounds are hyphenated to the rule, not to a guess. Your project manager confirms the choice against your end use.

Can you deliver a Hungarian transcript with an English translation?

Yes. We can deliver a Hungarian transcript, an English translation, or both side by side. The same native transcriber produces the source text, and a separate qualified translator works from the original audio rather than from the transcript alone, which preserves meaning a text-only translation can miss.

What is the Hungarian six-syllable hyphenation rule?

It is the rule that decides when a long compound word takes a hyphen. Hungary's Language Committee sets it at more than six syllables and more than two elements: past that point, the compound is hyphenated at the join between its two main parts; below it, or in a two-element compound of any length, it stays written solid. It is a count, not a sound, and the recording never signals it.

How do you get the six-syllable rule right without seeing it written down?

By counting, every time, on every long compound. Our Hungarian transcribers apply the rule as a matter of routine while transcribing, and a second linguist checks the syllable count and the element count against the Language Committee's own rulebook before delivery, so a single missed or added hyphen does not reach you.

What does Hungarian transcription cost?

There is no flat rate, because no two files take the same work. Runtime, recording quality, how many people are talking, your deadline and whether you also need an English version all move the figure. So does how compound-heavy the vocabulary is — technical and corporate material carries far more long compounds than a scripted piece to camera. Every quote carries our Price Match Promise.

How do you protect confidential Hungarian recordings?

Upload is encrypted, the file goes to one named Hungarian transcriber who has signed an NDA, and nothing is put through public speech-to-text services at any point. If you have your own confidentiality agreement we sign it, if you have retention rules we work to them, and if your policy says the audio goes once the transcript is approved, we delete it.

The recording has dense technical compounds and several people talk over each other. Is that a problem?

It is normal work. Phone audio, site noise, focus groups and meetings where three people speak at once all get transcribed, and long technical compounds are routine for our Hungarian transcribers. What difficult audio changes is time, and occasionally certainty about a name. We listen to a sample first and tell you straight what we expect to be able to capture.

How will the finished Hungarian transcript be delivered?

In whatever the next step needs: plain text, Word, PDF, SRT, VTT or your own template, with timecodes and speaker labels set the way you want them. Tell us what happens to the transcript after we send it and we format it for that, not for us.

Ready to transcribe your Hungarian audio?

Send us the files and tell us where the transcript will end up — we'll come back with an exact, itemised quote.
