Farsi is simply the name used in Iran for the Persian language, and the two terms are used interchangeably in English. Persian is the umbrella term: it is a pluricentric language with three national standards — Farsi in Iran, Dari in Afghanistan and Tajik in Tajikistan, the last written in Cyrillic. We record the first two; ask for either by name and we will know what you mean.

Farsi for Iran, Dari for Afghanistan. The two are closely related varieties of Persian and a speaker of one follows the other, but Dari carries its own pronunciation and vocabulary and an Afghan audience hears the difference straight away.
