About the language
Why native Bulgarian matters
Bulgarian is the official language of Bulgaria, spoken by around 8 million people, and it became the European Union's first Cyrillic-script official language when the country joined in 2007. A native Bulgarian voice is what makes a campaign land as local rather than translated in from a neighbouring market.
Bulgarian is a South Slavic language written in Cyrillic, and it is unusual among Slavic languages in having almost entirely lost the noun case system, using definite articles attached to the end of the word instead. It also has an evidential mood that marks whether the speaker witnessed what they are describing — a nuance with no direct English equivalent, and one that a native voice handles instinctively where a non-native read would not.
It is closely related to Macedonian and shares a good deal with Serbian, but it is a distinct standard with its own vocabulary and pronunciation. Casting a native Bulgarian speaker matters for the same reason it matters anywhere: audiences hear the difference straight away.

Bulgarian is Slavic built to a different plan. It dropped the case system that Russian, Czech and Polish still run on, and instead sticks the definite article onto the end of the word — «грaд» becomes «градът». The result reads and paces unlike any of its neighbours, and a Russian-speaking voice reading Bulgarian gets the stress patterns wrong in ways a Bulgarian listener hears at once. Bulgarian has no infinitive, which sounds like a linguist's footnote and turns out to matter in ordinary copy. Where English says «we want to help» or «learn to play», Bulgarian restructures the whole clause. A translator working literally from English produces something grammatical in neither language, and it appears most often in exactly the aspirational marketing constructions a brand reaches for. It is fixed in the writing, not the reading.
Bulgaria has a genuine claim on the Cyrillic alphabet, which was developed in the First Bulgarian Empire and spread from there, and it is a point of national pride rather than trivia. Practically it means Bulgarian audiences are unforgiving about text that has been produced with Russian defaults — different letter shapes are conventional in Bulgarian typography, and a Russian-styled font is noticed by readers even when the characters are technically correct.
There is also a large Bulgarian community across Western Europe, particularly in Spain, Germany and the UK, and content aimed at it carries different references and often a different purpose from content aimed at Sofia.

Is Bulgarian the same as Russian because both use Cyrillic?
