Bhojpuri is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language of Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and the Nepali Terai. Like Awadhi, the Indian census returns its speakers under Hindi, so it has no separate official status and is consistently undercounted — it is not in the Eighth Schedule of the constitution.

What makes it commercially unusual is what happened in the nineteenth century. Large numbers of people left the Bhojpur region as indentured labourers, and their descendants still speak the language in Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname and South Africa. Fiji Hindi and Caribbean Hindustani both derive substantially from Bhojpuri.

The practical consequence is rare and worth building a campaign around: a single Bhojpuri recording can address Bihar and Port Louis at once. Very few languages in our catalogue do that across continents. If your brief covers both the domestic Indian market and a heritage audience abroad, tell us — it usually changes the register rather than the language, and it can save you a second commission entirely.

Second point, and it decides quality expectations. Bhojpuri has an industry. Its film and music sector is substantial and its audiences are used to professional production. This is not a language where a rough read passes because the audience is assumed to be undemanding. They are not, and they notice.
