Odia translation services

Audiovisual translation is our specialisation, but our native Odia translators also handle any text — corporate documents, technical and marketing material, articles and eLearning. Western Odisha speaks Sambalpuri, which differs from Standard Odia in everyday words, so we agree which one you need.

About Odia translation

Western Odisha speaks Sambalpuri, so each script has to be either Sambalpuri or Standard Odia

Standard Odia is the official language of Odisha and the written language of the whole state. In western Odisha — Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, Jharsuguda and Subarnapur — people speak Sambalpuri, a variety many of its speakers regard as a language of its own. A survey carried out in 2006 found it shares only about three-quarters of its basic vocabulary with Standard Odia.

The differences are not accent alone. Everyday words change — water is ପାଣି in Standard Odia and ପାଏନ୍ in Sambalpuri, fish is ମାଛ and ଝୁରି — and verbs follow their own patterns. At the same time, Sambalpuri speakers use Standard Odia for formal communication, so a document in Standard Odia is right for Sambalpur, while the same wording as a radio spot can sound as if it were addressed to someone else.

The English source only says *Odia*. At GoLocalise we ask where the audience is and how each piece will reach them: Standard Odia for anything read or aimed at the whole state, Sambalpuri where you want western Odisha to hear its own language. The decision is made piece by piece at the brief, and every text is reviewed by a second native linguist before delivery.

How can we help you?

Your project manager has everything covered

One point of contact from brief to delivery, and a second linguist on every text before it reaches you.

1

Brief review

We review your source material and your audience, and agree up front the decisions this language forces before anyone starts translating.

2

Linguist assignment

Your project goes to a native Odia translator who knows your sector and writes in the variety agreed at the brief — Standard Odia, or Sambalpuri for western Odisha.

3

Translation and review

The text is translated and then checked by a second native linguist for accuracy, consistency, and register.

4

Delivery and variety check

Files arrive in the format you need, and the review pass checks that each piece holds the variety agreed for it, with no Standard Odia forms in a Sambalpuri script or the reverse.

Regional varieties

Odisha, western Odisha and the Odia-speaking market

Odia was the mother tongue of roughly 37.5 million people in India at the 2011 census (Census of India), most of them in Odisha, where it is the official language. The same census counted 2,630,381 people who gave Sambalpuri as their mother tongue, grouped under Odia — a figure that counts only those who reported it by that name.

Standard Odia is our default for commercial, corporate and broadcast work, and it is what we use unless your project says otherwise. Sambalpuri is a separate brief for material aimed at western Odisha, and other regional varieties such as Baleswari in the north or Ganjami in the south can be matched for voice where the audience calls for it.

Getting Odia right on screen

Odia's first question is often not how to translate a line but which Odia the line is for, and the answer can change from one piece of a campaign to the next.

Sambalpuri is not Standard Odia with an accent

A 2006 survey in western Odisha found Sambalpuri shares about three-quarters of its basic vocabulary with Standard Odia. Common words differ outright — ମାଛ and ଝୁରି for fish — and others change shape, so a Standard Odia script read in a Sambalpuri voice ends up as neither one nor the other.

Formal writing stays in Standard Odia

Sambalpuri speakers use Standard Odia for formal communication, so documents, forms and most on-screen text stay in Standard Odia even for western Odisha. Sambalpuri earns its place where the audience listens: radio and TV spots, dialogue and community messaging.

Sambalpuri is written as it is spoken

Sambalpuri drops final vowels that Standard Odia keeps, so ଭଲ becomes ଭଲ୍, and it has no ଳ, writing ଫଲ୍ where Standard Odia writes ଫଳ. We fix the spelling of recurring words in the project glossary so a Sambalpuri script is consistent from start to finish.

Timed, not dumped

We deliver spotted subtitle files and two-column voice-over scripts timed to the original — never a loose document that still needs spotting.

Most common questions

How much does Odia translation cost?

Odia translation is priced per word for text and per minute for audiovisual, depending on volume, subject matter and turnaround, with agreeing Standard Odia or Sambalpuri for each piece included as part of the brief rather than billed as an extra step. Send your files and we will come back with a free, itemised quote, backed by our Price Match Promise.

Are your Odia translations done by native linguists?

Yes. Native Odia linguists handle every translation, and a second native linguist independently reviews each text, checking that each piece holds the variety agreed for it and that Standard Odia and Sambalpuri forms have not been mixed within a script.

Do you provide Odia subtitling and voice over as well?

Yes — Odia translation, subtitling and voice over all come from one team, working to a single glossary throughout, so a campaign with Standard Odia on screen and Sambalpuri in the voice-over still calls every product and place by the same name.

Is Sambalpuri a separate language from Odia?

Its speakers usually regard it as one; outside the region it is often treated as a dialect of Odia, and the census groups it under Odia. For a translation the label matters less than the facts: it shares about three-quarters of its basic vocabulary with Standard Odia, which is difference enough to need a decision.

When should we use Sambalpuri instead of Standard Odia?

When the audience is in western Odisha and will hear the message rather than read it: radio and TV spots, dialogue and local campaigns. For documents and on-screen text we recommend Standard Odia, which Sambalpuri speakers themselves use for formal communication.

Do you deliver Odia subtitles and voice-over scripts, not just documents?

Yes — audiovisual is our specialisation. We deliver spotted SRT/VTT and timed two-column voice-over scripts, plus translated text when you need it.

Our English brief just says Odia. What do you need from us?

Two answers: where the audience is, and how each piece will reach them. From that we propose Standard Odia or Sambalpuri piece by piece and record it in the brief, so the translator, the reviewer and the voice actor all work to the same decision.

Do you cover other regional varieties of Odia?

Standard Odia is our default across the state. Odisha also has northern, southern and southwestern varieties such as Baleswari, Ganjami and Desia; where a voice-over should sound local to one of those areas, we brief it for the script and the voice rather than changing the written standard.

How quickly can an Odia translation project be delivered?

Most short documents are delivered within 24 to 48 hours. Word count, subject complexity and turnaround all move the date, and your project manager will confirm the timeline at the start.

How quickly will we hear back, and who will we be dealing with?

More than half of enquiries get a reply within thirty minutes during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm UK time), and the itemised quote normally follows within four working hours. After that you have one dedicated project manager who owns the job from brief to final file — not a ticket queue, and not a different name on every email. If it is easier, call +44 207 095 5730 and ask for them by name.

We are still pitching and the budget is not signed off. Can we still get a Odia quote?

Yes, and it is one of the commonest reasons people get in touch. Tell us it is for a pitch and you get a figure you can put in front of your own client, itemised so it stands up to being picked apart, with no obligation and no follow-up sales calls if the pitch goes elsewhere. If it lands, the quote still holds and we already know the project.

What if we find a cheaper Odia quote somewhere else?

Send it over. Our Price Match Promise covers like-for-like work, and because our quotes are itemised you can see exactly what is being compared — which is usually where the gap turns out to be, in a revision pass, a licence or a delivery format that the cheaper figure quietly left out. If it really is the same work for less, we match it.
