About Japanese translation
Japanese translation, where the register decision comes first
Japanese is written with three systems used together: kanji for most content words, hiragana for grammar and native vocabulary, and katakana for loanwords and emphasis. The balance between them is an editorial choice rather than a fixed rule, and it changes how formal, technical, or approachable a text feels.
Japanese expresses the relationship between writer and reader through keigo, and the level chosen affects verb forms throughout the document rather than a handful of pronouns. A corporate announcement, a software interface, and a consumer campaign each call for a different level, and getting it wrong reads as either presumptuous or oddly stiff.
There is a practical dimension too. Japanese usually contracts against English, sometimes substantially, and it is written without spaces between words, so line breaking follows its own rules. Layouts sized for English rarely translate across without adjustment.
At GoLocalise, we work with native Japanese translators matched to the subject matter, and every text is reviewed by a second linguist before delivery.

How can we help you?
Your project manager has everything covered
One point of contact from brief to delivery, and a second linguist on every text before it reaches you.
Brief review
We review your source material, your readers, and the level of formality your content calls for.
Linguist assignment
Your project goes to a native Japanese translator with experience in the relevant field.
Translation and review
The text is translated and then checked by a second native linguist for accuracy, register, and consistency.
Delivery and display check
Files are delivered in the format you need, with line breaking and layout checked rather than assumed.

Most common questions
It depends on the relationship the content implies. Business correspondence and official announcements call for a formal register, product interfaces and consumer marketing generally use a politer neutral form, and internal material can sit lower still. The choice affects the whole document rather than a few phrases, so we confirm it at the brief stage.
