Croatian translation services

Audiovisual translation is our specialisation, but our native Croatian translators also translate any text — corporate documents, technical and marketing material, articles and eLearning. In Croatia, informing the consumer in standard Croatian is a legal requirement, not a preference.

Datoteke pomoći programa Microsoft Excel

The brand name is left exactly as it is and the word programa alongside it carries the case ending instead. That is how a name survives a language that declines everything around it.

About Croatian translation

Croatian translation, where the standard is a legal requirement and not a style choice

Croatia's language act makes standard Croatian the means of informing the public and the consumer about products and services on the Croatian market. The same article requires that multilingual public notices and promotional messages are drafted in Croatian first, and then in the other languages.

That turns two familiar shortcuts into risks. A file adapted from Serbian or delivered as a generic regional version is not standard Croatian — ISO treats the three as separate languages — and a multilingual layout that puts another language first is not simply a design decision. Both are cheaper to get right at the brief than after the packaging is printed.

At GoLocalise, we work with native Croatian translators matched to the subject matter, and every text is reviewed by a second linguist before delivery.

How can we help you?

Your project manager has everything covered

One point of contact from brief to delivery, and a second linguist on every text before it reaches you.

1

Brief review

We review your source material and your audience, and agree up front the decisions this language forces before anyone starts translating.

2

Linguist assignment

Your project goes to a native Croatian translator with experience in the relevant field.

3

Translation and review

The text is translated and then checked by a second native linguist for accuracy, consistency, and register.

4

Delivery and consistency check

Files are delivered in the format you need, with the choices agreed at the brief applied consistently from the first line to the last.

Regional varieties

Croatia, and why regional versions do not transfer

Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian are close, and ISO 639 lists them as separate languages with their own codes. For consumer-facing material in Croatia, a version adapted from one of the others is not the same product.

The practical rule is simple. If the audience is Croatia, the file is written as Croatian from the start. If you need more than one of the three, we treat them as separate jobs rather than one file with substitutions.

Areas of expertise

What we specialise in

From corporate video and eLearning to documentary, advertising and subtitles — always audiovisual, written to standard Croatian rather than adapted from a neighbouring language.

Corporate and brand video

Company films and internal communications, written to fit the shot rather than overflow it.

eLearning and training video

Course modules and training films, with terminology kept consistent across the programme.

Documentary and interviews

Factual programming and interviews, where the register shifts between speakers and has to survive the move.

Advertising and social video

Campaigns and short-form video, cut to land inside the time available.

Subtitles and captions

Frame-accurate subtitles kept within a comfortable reading speed.

Voice over and dubbing scripts

Scripts timed to the original, ready for a native voice in the booth.

Built for video and audio

Getting Croatian right on screen

Croatian brings its own on-screen considerations, and one of them comes from the statute book rather than the grammar.

Croatian first in multilingual material

Where a notice or a promotional message carries several languages, the Croatian version is drafted first. It affects the layout, not just the copy.

Not adapted from Serbian

ISO treats Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian as separate languages. Consumer material for Croatia is written as Croatian from the first line.

Gender runs through the sentence

Adjectives and participles agree, so a line assembled from parts has to be reworked rather than filled in.

Timed, not dumped

We deliver spotted subtitle files and two-column voice-over scripts timed to the original — never a loose document that still needs spotting.

Deliverables

How your Croatian translation arrives

Subtitle files

SRT, VTT, STL or TTML, burnt in or as separate files, ready to drop into your edit.

Brand names kept, endings carried elsewhere

A product name is never bent to fit the grammar. A declinable word alongside it takes the ending, so the sentence agrees and the name stays intact.

Dual-column scripts

Source and target side by side with timecodes, the format the studio records from.

Reviewed, never single-pass

Every script is checked by a second native linguist before it reaches the studio.

Most common questions

How much does Croatian translation cost?

Croatian translation is priced per word for text and per minute for audiovisual, varying with volume, subject and turnaround. Send your files for a free, itemised quote, backed by our Price Match Promise.

Are your Croatian translations done by native linguists?

Yes. Native Croatian linguists translate and a second reviews every text, so it reads naturally and meets the standard expected in the market.

Do you provide Croatian subtitling and voice over as well?

Yes — Croatian translation, subtitling and voice over from one team, all written to the same standard.

Can we reuse our Serbian version for Croatia?

We would not recommend it. ISO 639 lists Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian as separate languages, and Croatian law makes standard Croatian the means of informing consumers about products and services on the Croatian market. A version adapted from Serbian is not the same deliverable.

Our packaging carries several languages. Does the order matter?

Yes. Croatia's language act requires multilingual public notices and promotional messages to be drafted in Croatian first and then in the other languages, so it affects the layout and not only the text. We flag it when we see multilingual material.

What happens to our product name in a language that declines everything?

The name is left intact. A declinable word is placed alongside it and carries the ending, so the sentence agrees grammatically without altering your brand name.

Will the Croatian version be longer than the English?

We do not publish an expansion figure for Croatian, because we have not found a source we trust for one. What we do instead is write to the space available and tell you at the brief if your layout is going to be tight.

Do you deliver Croatian subtitles and voice-over scripts, not just documents?

Yes — audiovisual is our specialisation. We deliver spotted SRT/VTT and timed two-column voice-over scripts, plus translated text when you need it.

How quickly can a Croatian translation project be delivered?

Most short documents are delivered within 24 to 48 hours. Word count, subject complexity and turnaround all move the date, and your project manager will confirm the timeline at the start.
