Audiovisual translation is our specialisation, but our native Russian translators also handle any text — corporate documents, technical and marketing material, articles and eLearning. Speaker gender and formality are fixed at the brief, not guessed later.

About Russian translation

Russian translation, where the speaker's gender is decided before the words are

Russian marks grammatical gender directly in the verb: ‘I was ready’ becomes был if a man says it and была if a woman does, and English gives no clue which. In video with narration, testimonials or an uncast voice, that choice cannot wait until the studio.

The same brief also has to settle ты or вы — informal or formal address — because Russian, unlike English, forces the choice on nearly every line rather than letting tone imply it.

At GoLocalise, we work with native Russian translators matched to the subject matter, and every text is reviewed by a second linguist before delivery.

How can we help you?

Your project manager has everything covered

One point of contact from brief to delivery, and a second linguist on every text before it reaches you.

1

Brief review

We go through your source material and ask the questions Russian will need answered: who is speaking, and how they address the viewer.

2

Linguist assignment

Your project goes to a native Russian translator with experience in the relevant field and the right regional familiarity.

3

Translation and review

The text is translated and then checked by a second native linguist for accuracy, consistency, and register.

4

Delivery and layout check

Files arrive in the format you asked for, with those choices applied the same way throughout.

Regional varieties

Russia, and the wider Russian-speaking world

Russian is spoken natively by roughly 150 million people, and is an official or widely used language across Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, with large Russian-speaking communities elsewhere in the region and in the diaspora.

Standard Russian, based on the Moscow dialect, is used consistently across these markets for business and media content. We still confirm formal or informal address preferences up front for any project aimed at a specific country or audience.

Varieties we cover

  • Standard Russian (Russia)
  • Russian (Belarus & Kazakhstan)

Voice over and dubbing scripts

Scripts timed to the original, with gender fixed before the cast reaches the booth.

Built for video and audio

Getting Russian right on screen

Russian brings its own on-screen considerations, and gender and formality are the two the brief has to settle first.

Speaker gender fixed at the brief

Russian past-tense verbs change with the speaker's gender — был or была — information English rarely provides. We confirm gender for every narrator, testimonial or off-screen voice before translation starts.

Ты or вы decided up front

Formal and informal address are marked on almost every line in Russian. We set the register from your audience and brand instead of leaving it to guesswork mid-project.

Timed, not dumped

Nothing leaves us needing to be matched to the picture afterwards: the subtitles come spotted and the script comes timed.

Consistent across a whole series

Gender and register decisions are logged per character or narrator, so a multi-episode series or campaign stays consistent instead of drifting from video to video.

Most common questions

How much does Russian translation cost?

Russian translation is priced per word for text and per minute for audiovisual work, and the amount depends on volume, subject matter and turnaround. Gender and formality decisions do not change the rate, only the brief. Send your files for a free, itemised quote, backed by our Price Match Promise.

Are your Russian translations done by native linguists?

Yes. Native Russian linguists translate every project, and a second native reviewer checks accuracy, register and terminology before delivery. Where a speaker's gender is involved — a narrator, a testimonial, a character — the reviewer also confirms the verb forms agree correctly, since a wrong choice there reads as a mistake to any Russian speaker.

Do you provide Russian subtitling and voice over as well?

Yes — Russian translation, subtitling and voice over all come from one in-house team, so decisions made at the brief, such as a speaker's gender or the formality of address, carry through consistently into the translated script, the recorded voice track and the final subtitle file.

Why does Russian translation need to know the speaker's gender?

Russian past-tense verbs change form depending on whether a man or woman is speaking — was ready becomes был or была — and English rarely says which. Without that answer at the brief stage, a translator has to guess, and a wrong guess means re-recording. We confirm gender for every narrator, testimonial and character before translation starts.

Formal or informal Russian (ты or вы) for our project?

We set the register from your audience and brand at the brief stage — вы for corporate, institutional or unfamiliar audiences, ты for younger or informal content — because Russian marks this choice on nearly every line of a script, not only in direct address, so it cannot be left to be decided later.

Do you deliver Russian subtitles and voice-over scripts, not just documents?

Yes — audiovisual is our specialisation, but we are not limited to it. We deliver spotted SRT/VTT files and timed two-column voice-over scripts for video, plus translated documents, articles, marketing copy and technical material whenever your project needs them, all from the same native Russian linguists.

What happens if we don't know the narrator's gender yet at brief stage?

It happens often, especially before a voice is cast. We ask the studio or agency for a placeholder decision, translate with that gender marked, and flag every line that would need to change if the eventual voice turns out to be different. It is far cheaper to fix at script stage than after recording is finished.

Is one Russian translation enough for Russia and other Russian-speaking markets?

For most business and media content, yes — standard Russian, based on the Moscow dialect, reads naturally across Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other Russian-speaking audiences. For consumer campaigns aimed squarely at one specific country, we recommend flagging it so vocabulary and tone can be checked against that market before recording begins.

How quickly can a Russian translation project be delivered?

Most short documents are delivered within 24 to 48 hours. Word count, subject complexity and the gender and register decisions gathered at the brief all affect the timeline, and your project manager will confirm an exact delivery date once the brief and files have been reviewed.
