No. Odia and Bengali are sibling Indo-Aryan languages and Odisha borders West Bengal, which is exactly why the substitution keeps getting suggested. But they are separate languages without fluent mutual intelligibility, and an Odia audience hears a Bengali reader straight away. They also use different scripts. Odia has its own alphabet, distinct from both Bengali script and Devanagari, with characteristic rounded letterforms. Your subtitle and graphics templates need a font that genuinely supports Odia — a Devanagari or Bengali font will not render it correctly, and the failure is not always obvious to someone who does not read the script. We check rendering on delivery, and it is worth testing your templates with a real Odia string early.

Practically, it means there is a deep and independent literary tradition to draw on, so an elevated register genuinely exists rather than being an artificially formal version of everyday speech. For heritage, cultural, ceremonial or documentary content that register is available and worth using.
