Swiss French voice over

Swiss French (Romandy) is mutually intelligible with French from France but carries a distinct, measured cadence and regional vocabulary. A native Swiss read reassures Swiss audiences that content speaks to them directly — important in a market sensitive to localisation. Well suited to corporate, financial, luxury and institutional content aimed at French-speaking Switzerland.

Swiss French clients tend to come from luxury, watchmaking, finance and pharma, where premium production values are expected and localisation is scrutinised. We cast native Romandy voices with the measured Swiss cadence and regional vocabulary that reassure Swiss audiences a brand understands their market rather than treating them as an extension of France.

In these categories the audience is discerning and the localisation is closely judged, so the measured Romandy cadence and Swiss vocabulary do real work in signalling that a brand belongs in the market. We cast native Suisse romande talent and direct for that restraint and polish, and for pan-Swiss campaigns we can align the French version with Swiss German and Italian so the brand sounds consistent across all three of the country's language regions.

Swiss French voice over — common questions

Do I need Swiss French rather than standard French?

For Romandy (French-speaking Switzerland), a native Swiss French voice carries the local pace and vocabulary — again septante and nonante — that audiences there expect. For pan-French reach, standard French works; tell us the target and we'll advise.

About French voice over

How to choose a French voice actor

French is spoken by close to 300 million people across around thirty countries and five continents, which is exactly why a French Voice Over is rarely a single choice. The right voice for an audience in Paris is not automatically the right voice for Montréal, Brussels or Dakar, and a native ear catches the difference at once.

Our French roster is organised by territory rather than lumped together, because a Parisian voice is not a neutral one anywhere except France. We cast from the region you are addressing, adapt the script to it — Québec has its own terminology conventions, and Belgian and Swiss French count differently above sixty — and run the recording, editing and delivery from there.

Whether you need European (France) French, Belgian French, Swiss French, Canadian (Québec) French or African French, we cast a native voice from the right region so the read fits the market you are speaking to.

French runs roughly 15–20% longer than English and is unusually sensitive to register and polish — the gap between copy that reads as translated and copy written in French is obvious to native ears, so we use native writers rather than converting the English.

A few production notes: France French and Canadian (Québécois) French are distinct in accent, vocabulary and idiom and should never be swapped. The main markets are France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and fast-growing francophone Africa, and corporate work is formal by default — vous vs tu is a deliberate choice we set with you.

France, Belgium and Switzerland do not count the same way, and it turns up in the most commercial content you have. France says soixante-dix, quatre-vingts and quatre-vingt-dix for seventy, eighty and ninety; Belgium and Switzerland say septante and nonante, and Switzerland also says huitante in parts. Any script with prices, dates, percentages, phone numbers or measurements runs into this immediately, and a French voice reading Belgian or Swiss copy — or the reverse — is marked as foreign on the first number. It is not an accent detail. It is a different word.

Canadian French is a separate market with a legal dimension, not a regional accent of French. Quebec has language legislation governing commercial communication, and content produced for France frequently does not satisfy it. Beyond compliance, the varieties differ enough in vocabulary and delivery that a France read for a Quebec audience is heard as foreign, and Quebec audiences are notably sensitive about it. If Canada is a market, it is its own recording and its own adaptation.

Quebec also resists anglicisms far more actively than France does. Where France says «email», «week-end» and «parking» without a second thought, Quebec uses courriel, fin de semaine and stationnement, and using the French forms in Canadian content signals that nobody checked. The reverse — Quebec's careful equivalents in a French script — reads as stilted. Same language, opposite reflex, and it runs through ordinary copy rather than technical vocabulary.

«Tu» or «vous» sets the relationship, and French is more conservative about it than the languages around it. Consumer brands aimed at younger audiences use tu; the moment content becomes financial, institutional, medical or B2B, vous is expected, and tu there reads as presumptuous rather than warm. There is no way to hedge: it is in every verb.

French runs longer than English, typically by fifteen to twenty per cent, so timed content needs the copy adapted rather than the delivery accelerated. It matters most in advertising, where the last third of a rushed read is where the call to action lives.

African French is a real and growing market, with large audiences across West and Central Africa, and it is served badly by a Paris recording when the content is aimed there. The accent, the pace and some vocabulary differ, and for development, public-health and telecoms work — which is a great deal of what runs in those markets — an audience that hears a French voice hears content made elsewhere for someone else.

Tell us the markets before anything else and we will tell you how many recordings you actually need. That conversation is free and it usually saves money rather than adding to it, because the honest answer is sometimes fewer than you feared. Then you get an itemised quote, the script adapted per market rather than translated once, and a free casting of French voices performing the lines you have written in each variety you need. Most common questions

Can one French recording cover France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada?

No, and numbers are the quickest way to see why: France says soixante-dix and quatre-vingt-dix where Belgium and Switzerland say septante and nonante. Any script with prices, dates or phone numbers gives the market away on the first figure. Canada is further still and carries a legal dimension in Quebec. Tell us the markets and we will tell you how many recordings you genuinely need — sometimes fewer than you expect.

Is Canadian French really that different from French from France?

Different enough that a France recording is heard as foreign in Quebec, and Quebec audiences are notably sensitive about it. The vocabulary diverges in everyday words, the delivery differs, and Quebec actively avoids anglicisms that France uses without thinking — courriel rather than email, fin de semaine rather than week-end. There is also language legislation governing commercial communication in Quebec. It is its own recording and its own adaptation.

Should the French script use tu or vous?

Vous unless there is a clear reason not to. French is more conservative about this than neighbouring languages: consumer brands aimed at younger audiences use tu, but financial, institutional, medical and B2B content expects vous, and tu there reads as presumptuous. It appears in every verb, so it is decided in the writing rather than adjusted in the read.

Do you cast African French?

Yes, and it is a distinct brief rather than a variation on a Paris read. West and Central African audiences hear a French accent as content made elsewhere for someone else, which matters most in exactly the development, public-health and telecoms work that dominates those markets. Tell us the countries and we will cast for them.

Do you have a French voice over agency?

Yes, and end to end: casting, translation or adaptation, direction, recording, editing and delivery all sit with us. The part clients most often want help with is the decision before any of that — whether one French read covers the markets they are buying, or whether Québec needs its own. We will give you a straight answer on that first, then an itemised quote with the Price Match Promise attached.

Which type of French do I need, European, Canadian or African?

It depends on your audience. European French suits France, Belgium and Switzerland, Canadian French is for Québec, and African French covers much of West and Central Africa. The gap between European and Québécois French is roughly comparable to British versus American English, with real differences in accent, vocabulary and idiom, so we advise on the right variety for your target market before recording.

Does advertising aimed at Québec have to be in French?

Québec's Charter of the French Language sets strict requirements for French in commercial and public-facing content, and audiences there expect a genuine Québécois voice rather than a European one. We record with native French-Canadian talent so your content meets local expectations and sounds native to the market. This is general information rather than legal advice, so we would always recommend confirming the specifics with your legal team.

Can one European French recording also serve Belgium and Switzerland?

In most cases, yes. Standard European French is well understood across France, Belgium and Switzerland, and a neutral Parisian read travels comfortably between them. If a project is aimed specifically at a Belgian or Swiss audience and you want it to feel local, we can cast talent from that market instead.

How much does a French voice over cost?

French is priced per variety, which surprises people. A script recorded once in Parisian French and once in Québécois is two sessions and two licences, not one job with a small surcharge — and if you only need one of them, saying so early is the cheapest decision on the project. Beyond that the quote is a studio fee covering the session, the engineer and the direction, plus a usage licence sized to where the audio runs and for how long. Send the script and the territory list for an exact figure, itemised, with our Price Match Promise behind it.

How do I hire a French voice actor?

Tell us which French you need before anything else — France, Québec, Belgium, Switzerland or West Africa — and roughly who is listening. We come back with a shortlist drawn from that variety rather than from French in general, record it in our Central London studios or through our network, and hand the whole thing to one project manager.

What projects can I use a French voice over for?

Luxury and beauty brands are a constant, as is corporate and compliance content for companies with French operations. Add to that broadcast and radio advertising, museum and heritage narration, eLearning for francophone Africa, IVR systems, game and animation dubbing, and audiobooks.

Do you offer French dubbing, subtitling and translation as well?

Yes, and doing it together matters more in French than in most languages, because the same translation choices have to hold across the recording and the on-screen text. One team means the terminology in your subtitles is the terminology the actor said.

Why choose GoLocalise for French voice over services?

We have been recording French in London since 2008, which is long enough to have made every mistake worth avoiding — including sending a Parisian read to a Montréal client. Native-speaking directors sit in on French sessions, so the register, the liaison and the choice between tu and vous get decided in the room rather than discovered in review.

Can I hear French voice samples before booking?

Yes — the demos below are a starting point, but they are cut from other people's projects. Send us your script and shortlisted French actors will read it free of charge, in the variety you need, so the comparison is fair.

What file formats do you deliver French voice overs in?

WAV, MP3 or AIFF, split by take or mixed, mastered to the target your platform expects. One practical warning: French runs roughly fifteen to twenty per cent longer than English, so if the audio has to fit picture, tell us at script stage rather than at the mix.

Which sectors use French voice over the most?

French carries strong associations with elegance and craft, so it is especially popular for luxury, beauty, fragrance, fashion and fine-food brands. It is also in constant demand for tourism and hospitality, automotive, and the corporate and institutional content produced across France, Belgium, Switzerland and the EU institutions. We cast the tone to the sector — refined and understated for luxury, warm and clear for corporate.

Can you deliver a French voice over with a subtle rather than strong accent?

Yes. For international brands that want French sophistication without a heavy regional colour, we cast a polished, neutral European French and direct the read to the exact strength you want. For content aimed squarely at a local market, we can lean into a more characterful regional delivery instead — you decide the balance during casting.
