Most African-language work we take on is NGO, public-health and development content, and for good reason — that is where the volume is. Setswana is the exception, and it is worth saying plainly, because it changes who you are writing for.

Setswana is the national language of Botswana, an upper-middle-income country with a stable economy built on diamond mining, a developed financial sector and a high-value tourism industry — the Okavango Delta operates at the premium end of the market. Content commissioned in Setswana is more often banking, insurance, mining, corporate training and travel than aid communication.

It is also cross-border. Setswana is one of South Africa's official languages, spoken particularly in the North West province, so a single recording can serve audiences on both sides. That is unusual and it is a genuine budget advantage: two markets, one language, one session.

Worth being clear on one thing. Setswana belongs to the Sotho-Tswana group alongside Sesotho and Sepedi. They are related and share a good deal, but they are separate languages and do not substitute for each other.
