South African English voice over services

South African English is a variety in its own right, shaped by the country's linguistic landscape rather than sitting slightly to one side of British English. It carries elements from Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa and other local languages in its vowels, its rhythm and its vocabulary.

The reason is in the numbers. English is the language of business, government and the media in South Africa, but it is the home language of only around 8.7% of the population — fifth behind isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans and Sepedi, in the 2022 census. Most people who speak South African English came to it as a second language, over an Afrikaans or Nguni substrate. That is what gives the accent its character, and it is why a British actor doing an impression does not pass.

Historically it goes back to British settlers in the early nineteenth century, and it absorbed the languages around it from there. The result is close enough to British English to be immediately understood, and different enough that a South African listener knows within a sentence whether the voice is one of their own.

There are four things a native brings that are hard to fake: the vowel sounds and intonation; the cultural context that lets idiom land properly; the borrowed vocabulary from Afrikaans and the Nguni languages that appears in ordinary speech; and plain fluency, so the read sounds like someone talking rather than someone performing an accent.

Demand usually comes from corporate and eLearning content for South African teams, advertising aimed at the local market, mining, financial services and tourism, and from film and television work where a South African character has to sound South African.
