Swedish is spoken natively by around 10 million people, the majority in Sweden, where the 2009 Language Act makes it the country's principal language, with a further recognised community of roughly 290,000 speakers across Finland, where Swedish is a national language alongside Finnish.

Most of its core vocabulary traces back to Old Norse, but modern Swedish has its own sound, grammar and rhythm. One thing that sets it apart from most other Germanic languages is lexical pitch: a number of word pairs are distinguished only by tone, which means a reader who is not native can produce a perfectly correct word that still sounds wrong to a Swedish ear.

Sweden abolished formal address, deliberately and within living memory. The du-reform of the late 1960s replaced the formal «ni» with «du» across society, and it stuck: today Swedish brands, institutions and even government address everyone informally. Using «ni» to sound respectful now reads as either archaic or faintly sarcastic, and it is a mistake translators from more formal languages make constantly. If your brand guidelines say «formal tone», that means something different in Swedish, and it is worth saying so before the script is written.

Swedish has a pitch accent, two distinct tonal patterns that distinguish otherwise identical words. It is what gives Swedish its characteristic melody, and it is the thing a Norwegian or Danish speaker reading Swedish gets subtly wrong — understood, but audibly not native. Scandinavian talent is not interchangeable, however close the languages look on paper.

Finland Swedish is a separate casting decision. Swedish is an official language of Finland with a substantial community of speakers, and Finland Swedish differs noticeably in pronunciation — flatter, without the pitch pattern that marks the Swedish of Sweden — and in some vocabulary. A Sweden-Swedish read for a Finnish-Swedish audience is understood and marked as foreign. If Finland is a market, say so.

English sits comfortably in Swedish copy because proficiency is very high, but that cuts both ways: the audience is fluent enough to judge the Swedish precisely and to compare it with the original. A weak Swedish version does not read as a nice gesture; it reads as an afterthought.

Swedish is modest in expansion against English, so timing is less of a problem here than in German or Finnish — but compounds still run long, and where the reader breathes decides whether a technical sentence can be followed.

Swedish compounds are written as one word, and splitting them changes the meaning. Särskrivning — writing a compound as separate words, under the influence of English — is the best-known error in written Swedish and it is not merely untidy: «en brun hårig flicka» and «en brunhårig flicka» say different things. It matters for on-screen text and subtitles rather than the audio, and it is the fastest way for a Swedish reader to conclude that nobody Swedish checked the work.

Swedish has a sound English does not, the sj-sound, produced differently across the country and notoriously hard for learners. It appears in ordinary words, and a non-native reader either substitutes something else or over-articulates it. Together with the pitch accent it is why we cast native speakers rather than confident Scandinavians.
