About the language

Why native Slovak matters

Slovak is the official language of Slovakia, spoken by around 5 million people, and an official language of the European Union. It also has recognised minority status in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia and Romania.

Slovak is a West Slavic language written in the Latin alphabet with a generous set of diacritics, and it is often described as the most mutually intelligible of the Slavic languages — a Slovak speaker tends to follow Czech, Polish and Croatian more easily than those speakers follow one another. It has a six-case grammar and, unusually, syllabic consonants that let words like *štvrť* exist without a vowel.

Slovak and Czech are close enough that speakers understand each other without effort, and for forty years they shared a state. But they are separate languages with separate standards, and younger Slovaks have noticeably less passive exposure to Czech than their parents did. Substituting one for the other is a shortcut audiences pick up on, so we cast Slovak and Czech separately.

Demand for Slovak voice over typically comes from automotive manufacturing, which is a major part of the Slovak economy, along with shared-service and outsourcing centres, e-learning publishers, retail brands and EU institutional content.

Most common questions

We don't recommend it. Czech and Slovak are close and largely mutually intelligible, but they are distinct languages with distinct standards, and younger Slovak audiences have less everyday exposure to Czech than previous generations did. A Czech read will be understood in Slovakia and will also be noticed. For anything customer-facing we cast natively for each market.
