About Polish voice over

How to cast Polish voice actors

Polish is a West Slavic language and the official language of Poland, spoken natively by around 40 million people, with a further diaspora across the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Canada and Brazil. It ranks as the sixth-most-spoken language in the European Union and holds official status in the EU.

It is most closely related to Slovak and Czech, but has its own grammar, seven cases and a sound shaped by palatal consonants and nasal vowels. Standard Polish, based largely on the Greater Poland and Masovian dialect groups, is what most audiences expect. Regional accents from Silesia, the Goral highlands and the eastern borderlands carry their own character where the content calls for it.

At GoLocalise, we work with professional Polish voice actors who record in approved studios. We stay on top of every step, from script review and casting through to editing and final delivery, to ensure the voice you go out with matches the audience and content you are producing for.

Poland does not dub most foreign content — it uses a lektor, a single voice reading the translated script over the original audio, which stays audible underneath. It is the dominant convention for film and television outside children's programming, and Polish audiences are entirely used to it. This matters commercially: if your content is being localised for Poland, the choice between a lektor read, full dubbing and subtitles is a real one with very different costs, and the default assumption imported from Western Europe is often the wrong one. Tell us what the content is and where it will run and we will tell you which convention fits.

Polish addresses strangers in the third person, and it changes the whole script. You do not say «you» to someone you do not know; you say «pan» or «pani» and conjugate the verb as though speaking about them. English has no equivalent, so a translated script routinely arrives with the informal «ty» throughout because that is what the English «you» became. To a Polish listener that reads as presumptuous rather than friendly, in exactly the customer-facing content where you were aiming for warmth. It is fixed in the writing, not in the read.

Polish also runs longer than English and packs harder consonant clusters, which affects timing twice over: there are more syllables and they take more work to articulate cleanly. A script timed to English and handed over unadapted forces the voice actor to choose between overrunning and blurring the consonants, and the second is what usually happens. We adapt for timing as part of the job.

Seven cases mean that names and product names change form depending on their role in the sentence. Brand names in particular are a live decision: some are left uninflected, which looks like a foreign object in the sentence, and some are declined, which reads naturally but alters the brand as written. There is no universal right answer, but there is a wrong one, which is leaving it to whoever happens to be reading. We agree it with you in advance and keep it consistent.

There is also a very large Polish community in the UK and Ireland, and content aimed at it is a different brief from content aimed at Poland — more code-switching with English, different practical references, often a different purpose entirely. Tell us where the audience is.

Ask us for a free casting before you decide anything else. Send the script and we will reply with an itemised quote, a recommendation on lektor against dubbing if that is in play, and shortlisted Polish voices recorded on your own copy without charging for it. [Request a Polish voice over quote](/get-a-quote?help=Polish%20voice%20over), or ask us first which localisation route makes sense for your content — that advice costs nothing.

Polish splits its plurals by whether the group includes a man, using a distinct masculine-personal form that changes both the noun and everything agreeing with it. Any script that addresses a group — customers, employees, users, participants — runs into it immediately, and the choice is not neutral: the alternative form applied to a mixed group is a grammatical error rather than an inclusive alternative. Modern Polish is actively debating how to handle this, and it is worth a conversation rather than a default.

Polish has a nasal vowel system and consonant clusters that reward a professional and punish a competent amateur, and the difference is audible in the first line. Combined with the case endings that shift stress and form, it is why we do not accept fluent second-language readers for Polish however good their vocabulary.

Most common questions

How should our Polish script address a mixed group of people?

It needs a decision rather than a default. Polish uses a distinct masculine-personal plural form when a group includes a man, and it changes both the noun and everything agreeing with it — applying the alternative form to a mixed group is a grammatical error rather than an inclusive choice. Modern Polish is actively debating this, so we raise it with you at script review.

What is a lektor, and do we need one for Poland?

A lektor is a single voice reading the translated script over the original audio, which remains audible underneath. It is the dominant convention in Poland for film and television outside children's content, and audiences are entirely used to it. It costs far less than full dubbing and suits some content types much better. Tell us what the content is and where it will run and we will recommend between lektor, dubbing and subtitles.

Why does our Polish translation use ty when we asked for a formal tone?

Because English has one word for «you» and Polish has several, and the informal «ty» is the default a machine or a hurried translator lands on. Polish addresses strangers in the third person, with pan or pani. To a Polish listener the informal form in customer-facing content reads as presumptuous. It is a writing problem, not a delivery one, and we fix it in the script.

How do you handle our brand name in a Polish script?

We agree it with you before recording. Polish has seven cases, so names change form depending on their role in the sentence — leaving a brand uninflected looks foreign in the sentence, declining it reads naturally but alters the name as written. Either can be right; what is wrong is leaving it to whoever happens to be reading on the day.

Do you have a Polish voice over agency?

Yes — GoLocalise is a full-service Polish voice over agency. Send us your script and we'll shortlist native Polish voice actors, then handle casting, recording, editing and delivery in-house. Our Polish voice over services cover commercials, corporate, e-learning, IVR and more — with a free, itemised quote backed by our Price Match Promise.

Which type of Polish accent do I need?

Most projects work well with standard Polish, the variety used in national broadcasting and understood across the country. Where the content calls for it, a Silesian or Goral accent adds regional flavour for community-facing work, while accents from the eastern borderlands suit content connecting with audiences in Lithuania, Belarus or Ukraine.

Can you record in the Polish “lektor” style?

Yes. The lektor tradition uses a single voice, usually male, to narrate all dialogue over the original audio. It is how most foreign film and television has been presented in Poland for decades. Our Polish voice actors are familiar with the convention and can deliver in that style where the format requires it.

How quickly can a Polish voice-over project be delivered?

While most short projects are delivered within 24 to 48 hours, the exact turnaround depends on script length, talent availability and whether translation or localisation is needed alongside the recording. At the start of your project, your project manager will confirm the timeline.

Do you record Polish for both Poland and the Polish diaspora?

Yes — standard Polish serves audiences in Poland and Polish communities abroad from a single native recording. Send your script and we'll quote it.

Will the Polish recording match the length of my English original?

Not automatically. Polish tends to run longer than English once recorded, which matters when the audio has to sit against existing video. We review the script for timing before the session so the read can be paced to fit.

How much does a Polish voice over cost?

Poland has a convention that catches most foreign clients out: a great deal of translated audiovisual content there is voiced by a single, deliberately flat narrator reading over the original audio — the lektor. It is cheaper than full dubbing and Polish audiences accept it in contexts where other markets would not. Whether your piece wants that or a fully performed read changes both the casting and the price, so we ask first. Session fee plus usage licence, itemised, Price Match Promise included.

Can you provide Polish voice over in different accents and dialects?

Yes. We cast native Polish voice actors and match the regional accent or dialect your audience in Poland expects, so your content sounds local rather than translated.

What file formats do you deliver Polish voice overs in?

We supply Polish recordings to broadcast specification in any common format (WAV, MP3, AIFF and others), as individual takes or one ready-to-use mix.

Ready to start your Polish voice over project?
