About the language
The register decision matters more than the accent
Tamil has an unusually wide gap between the language as written and the language as spoken. Literary Tamil is what appears in documents, news bulletins and formal writing; spoken Tamil is what people actually use, and the two differ in verb endings and morphology, not just in word choice. Nobody holds a conversation in literary Tamil.
That produces the single most common problem with Tamil voice over, and it happens before anyone reaches a booth. A script written in literary Tamil, recorded faithfully, comes out accurate and stiff — it sounds like a news bulletin even when the content is a commercial. The actor did nothing wrong and the translation is correct. What went missing is a decision about register.
So we ask up front. Literary Tamil for news-style narration, official and public-sector content, and anything that should sound authoritative. Spoken Tamil for advertising, social, dialogue, eLearning and anything meant to sound like a person talking to you. The same actor can deliver either; it is a direction decision rather than a casting one.
Tamil is also official in three countries — India, where it is the language of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, as well as Sri Lanka and Singapore — with a long-established community in Malaysia and a broad diaspora beyond that. Vocabulary and delivery norms differ between them, particularly for formal and technical terms, so it helps to say which market you are addressing.
Typical work is corporate video and internal communications, eLearning and compliance training, advertising for Tamil Nadu and for Singapore and Sri Lankan audiences, public-information content, banking and insurance material, and film, broadcast and OTT work for Tamil audiences.

Getting Tamil right
What to know before you record
One question decides how the whole read lands, and it is easy to miss because it is not about the voice.
Written Tamil and spoken Tamil are not the same
They differ in morphology and verb endings, not only in vocabulary. Recording a literary script for a conversational brief produces something correct that nobody would say out loud.
Decide the register in the brief
Literary for news-style and official content, spoken for advertising, dialogue and eLearning. Tell us which and we direct for it. The same actor covers both, so this costs nothing if it is settled early.
Three countries, three sets of norms
Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and Singapore differ in formal and technical vocabulary. A read that is right for one can sound slightly foreign in another, so name the market when you brief.
Supply the script in Tamil script
Romanised Tamil is ambiguous about vowel length and retroflex consonants, both of which change meaning. Native script removes the guesswork before the session rather than during it.
