About the language

Why native Lithuanian matters

Lithuanian is the official language of Lithuania, spoken by around 3 million people, and one of the official languages of the European Union. There is also a substantial Lithuanian-speaking community in the UK and Ireland, which is often part of the audience for UK-produced content.

Lithuanian is one of only two surviving Baltic languages, alongside Latvian, and it is famously conservative — linguists study it because it preserves grammatical features lost everywhere else in the Indo-European family. It has seven noun cases, a pitch accent that moves around within a word's forms, and no relation whatsoever to Russian or Polish despite the geography.

Because the stress pattern shifts as words change form, mispronunciation is easy for a non-native speaker and immediately audible to a Lithuanian one. This is one of the languages where casting natively is not a nicety — a near-miss read simply does not work.

Demand for Lithuanian voice over typically comes from fintech and financial services, which have grown sharply in Vilnius, along with logistics and transport, e-learning publishers, retail brands and EU institutional content.

Most common questions

No. The three Baltic countries are frequently bundled commercially, but they do not share a language. Lithuanian and Latvian are both Baltic languages and are still not mutually intelligible, and Estonian is Finno-Ugric — closer to Finnish than to either of its neighbours. A Baltic campaign needs three separate recordings. We handle all three and keep the terminology aligned across them.
