About the language
Why native Latvian matters
Latvian is the official language of Latvia, spoken by around 1.5 million people, and one of the official languages of the European Union. Latvia also has a large Russian-speaking minority, so the language you choose is a decision worth making deliberately rather than by default.
Latvian is one of only two surviving Baltic languages, alongside Lithuanian. The two are related but not mutually intelligible — a Latvian speaker does not simply follow Lithuanian. Latvian has seven noun cases, stress fixed on the first syllable, and a set of long vowels and softened consonants marked with diacritics.
Because stress is fixed and the vowel length is phonemic, a non-native read tends to fall apart quickly: get a vowel length wrong and you have a different word. Casting natively is the only reliable route for anything customer-facing.
