About the language

Why native Estonian matters

Estonian is the official language of Estonia, spoken by around 1.1 million people, and one of the official languages of the European Union. Estonia also has a substantial Russian-speaking minority, so the language choice for a campaign is a deliberate decision rather than an automatic one.

Despite sitting between Latvia and the Gulf of Finland, Estonian is not a Baltic language at all. It is Finno-Ugric — a close relative of Finnish and a distant cousin of Hungarian — and it is completely unrelated to Latvian, Lithuanian or Russian. Grouping it with its neighbours is one of the most common mistakes in Baltic localisation briefs.

It has fourteen noun cases and three degrees of consonant and vowel length, where most languages have two. That third length distinction is the hard part: it is not marked in the spelling, and getting it wrong changes the meaning of the word. It is one of the clearest cases anywhere for casting a native speaker.

Demand for Estonian voice over typically comes from technology and digital-government content, for which Estonia is well known, along with fintech, e-learning publishers, logistics and EU institutional material.

Most common questions

No. The three Baltic countries are frequently bundled commercially, but they do not share a language. Lithuanian and Latvian are Baltic languages and are not mutually intelligible with each other, and Estonian is Finno-Ugric — closer to Finnish than to either of its neighbours. A Baltic campaign needs three separate recordings. We handle all three and keep the terminology aligned across them.
