Xhosa voice over services

Xhosa is one of South Africa's official languages and the country's second most spoken home language after Zulu, concentrated in the Eastern Cape and strongly present in Cape Town. It is a Nguni language, in the Bantu family, with noun classes and tone.

What makes it unusual is the click consonants. Xhosa has three series — written c, x and q, for dental, lateral and postalveolar clicks — each with voiced, aspirated and nasal variants. They came into the language through contact with Khoisan languages, and they are full phonemes: they distinguish one word from another exactly the way any other consonant does.

For casting, that settles an argument that most languages require paragraphs to make. A non-native speaker does not produce these sounds. Not *produces them with an accent* — does not produce them, because articulating a click cleanly at speed is a skill acquired in childhood or through specific training. What comes out instead is a different word, or nothing. Every other page on this site has to explain why a native speaker matters. Here you can simply hear it.

The other question worth answering directly is Zulu. Xhosa and Zulu are closely related and there is a real degree of mutual intelligibility, so we are not going to pretend a Zulu recording would be incomprehensible. It would be understood. It would also be noticed, because these are separate languages with separate identities in a country where language is a live matter, and addressing a Xhosa audience in Zulu says something you probably did not intend to say. Being understood and being spoken to are not the same thing.
