About the language
One language, two states, and two different prestiges
Telugu is a Dravidian language with its own script, official in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is the only language we cover whose market was split by a recent administrative change, and the effects are still live.
In 2014, Andhra Pradesh was divided and Telangana became a separate state, with Hyderabad as its capital. The language is the same on both sides. The standing of each variety is not.
The coastal Andhra variety has long been the norm of broadcast, cinema and education — it is what sounds like *standard Telugu* to most ears. The Telangana variety was for decades underrepresented in media and stereotyped in film, and since statehood it has gained visibility and a distinct sense of pride.
So the casting decision is not cosmetic. A coastal read aimed at a Telangana audience is not heard as neutral; it is heard as an outside voice. The reverse is not automatic either. Tell us which state the content is for and we take it into account — we will not pretend it makes no difference.
Worth knowing for scale: Telugu cinema has become the highest-grossing film industry in India, ahead of Bollywood in several recent years. This is not a small regional market with ambitions; it is where the country's most expensive films get made, and audience expectations of production quality follow from that. Typical work is corporate video and internal communications, eLearning and compliance training, advertising for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, technology and pharma content out of Hyderabad, banking and agricultural material, and OTT and broadcast content.
Getting Telugu right
What to know before you record
One question matters more than the rest, and it is geographic rather than technical.
Andhra Pradesh or Telangana
The coastal variety carries the weight of broadcast tradition; the Telangana variety has gained prominence since the 2014 split. Neither is a neutral default for the other's audience. Name the state in the brief.
Production expectations are high
Telugu cinema now leads Indian box office revenue, so audiences are used to well-made audio. A thin or under-directed read stands out more here than in a smaller market.
Supply the script in Telugu script
Romanised Telugu leaves vowel length and retroflex consonants ambiguous, and both change meaning. Native script settles pronunciation before the session rather than during it.
Not covered by Hindi or Tamil
Telugu is Dravidian, unrelated to Hindi, and separate from Tamil and Kannada despite the family link. We cast native Telugu speakers and can run several Indian languages together.
