Kannada is the language of Karnataka, a Dravidian language with its own script, and the everyday language of Bengaluru — which is where the assumption usually goes wrong.

The reasoning that fails runs like this: Bengaluru is India's technology hub, everyone there works in English, and Hindi covers whatever English does not. Both halves mislead. English works in the office and on the campus, not across the city. And Karnataka is not a Hindi-speaking state — Hindi there is a language people may have learned, not the language of home.

There is also a dimension worth understanding before writing for this market. Language carries weight in Karnataka, with a long-running and active movement around the use of Kannada in signage, administration and public life. For a brand, the practical translation is this: using Kannada does not read as optional courtesy, it reads as respect — and not using it communicates something too. We are not taking a position on any of that; we are saying that a media plan drawn up from outside tends to underweight it.

The second case is more concrete and easier to cost. Bengaluru concentrates service centres, logistics, delivery and manufacturing where the workforce is local and Kannada-speaking even when the management layer runs in English. Compliance, safety and onboarding training delivered only in English is half-understood by the people it is meant to protect. That is a real, funded use case that very few briefs raise.
