About the language

Why native Serbian matters

Serbian is the official language of Serbia, spoken by around 9 million people, and it is also co-official in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, with recognised status in Croatia, North Macedonia, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. A native Serbian voice is what makes content feel local across that whole footprint.

Serbian is a South Slavic language and the only major European language in active digraphia — it is written in both Cyrillic and Latin, and educated speakers read both interchangeably. Cyrillic is the constitutionally official script and dominates public-sector and institutional material, while Latin is common in business and online. If your project has on-screen text as well as voice, that choice needs making early.

Serbian is closely related to Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin, and speakers understand one another without difficulty. The practical differences are in vocabulary and the script: Serbian tends to take the international loanword where Croatian coins a native equivalent. Audiences pick this up immediately, so we cast per market rather than treating the region as one.

Demand for Serbian voice over typically comes from consumer brands entering the Balkan market, automotive and manufacturing, e-learning publishers, telecoms and banking, and broadcasters localising for Serbia and the diaspora.

Most common questions

Both are correct and both are widely read in Serbia. Cyrillic is the constitutionally official script and is expected for public-sector, institutional and formal content. Latin is more common in commercial, technical and online contexts, and travels better across the region. Tell us your audience and channel and we'll advise — for voice over it makes no difference to the recording, but it matters for subtitles and on-screen text.
