Luganda is the language of the Baganda, the largest ethnic group in Uganda, and the most widely spoken indigenous language in the country. In Kampala and across the central region it is the language of trade, radio, advertising and daily life.

The planning mistake this page exists to prevent happens early, when someone decides the language list. The reasoning looks sound: Swahili is the lingua franca of East Africa and holds official status in Uganda, so Swahili should cover Uganda. On paper that is correct. On the ground it is not how Kampala works — Swahili is used far less in everyday life there than in Kenya or Tanzania, and it carries historical associations with the military that have not helped its standing in the centre of the country.

So a Swahili recording aimed at Uganda can be perfectly intelligible and still fail to land. That gap between being understood and being spoken to is the whole argument for Luganda, and it matters most for exactly the work Uganda attracts: public health, development, financial inclusion and agricultural extension, where trust is the point of the communication.

Technically, Luganda is a Bantu language with a full noun-class system, so agreement runs through the sentence via prefixes, and it is tonal, so pitch distinguishes words. Neither survives a non-native approximation, and both mean the text runs longer than the English it came from.
