Cebuano voice over services

Native Cebuano — Bisaya — voice actors for the Visayas and Mindanao. Not a regional accent of Filipino: a separate language that Filipino speakers do not automatically understand, and vice versa.

About the language

A Filipino campaign is not simply less effective here. It is not understood.

Cebuano — which its speakers call Bisaya or Binisaya — is the language of the central Visayas, Negros, Bohol and much of Mindanao. Roughly the southern half of the Philippines runs on it.

Here is the part that makes this page different from most language pages we write. Usually the argument is that a neighbouring variety will be understood but will sound foreign. That is not the situation in the Philippines. Cebuano and Tagalog are both Austronesian and they share loanwords from Spanish and English, but they are not mutually intelligible. A campaign recorded only in Filipino does not reach a monolingual Cebuano speaker in a diluted way. It does not reach them.

Filipino, which is based on Tagalog, is the national language and is taught throughout the country, so many people in the Visayas and Mindanao do follow it. But assuming that coverage is a gamble, not a plan — and there is a real, well-documented sensitivity in the south about content produced in Manila and pushed outward. Recording in Cebuano is heard as being addressed rather than being included as an afterthought.

One small thing that signals you have done the homework: call it Bisaya. That is the word speakers use for it themselves. "Cebuano" is the term you will find in language catalogues, including ours, but it is not what people say at home.

Typical work is consumer advertising and FMCG, public-health and government information, financial services and remittance products, eLearning and training, broadcast and radio, and corporate communications for organisations with operations or customers across the Visayas and Mindanao.

Getting Cebuano right

What to know before you record

The main decision is a coverage question, and it is more clear-cut here than in most markets.

Filipino does not automatically cover the south

Cebuano and Tagalog are separate, non-intelligible languages. Many people in the Visayas and Mindanao follow Filipino from schooling, but building a campaign on that assumption is a gamble.

It reads as being addressed

There is genuine sensitivity in the south about Manila-produced content. Recording in Cebuano is heard as a decision to speak to that audience rather than around it.

Call it Bisaya

That is what speakers call the language. Using the term in your copy and your brief signals you know the market rather than the catalogue entry.

In-person direction is possible

Both our Cebuano voices are London-based, which is unusual for the language. If you want to be in the room for the session, that is genuinely available here.

How we can help

One partner for the whole Philippines job

1

Voice over & narration

Native Cebuano for consumer advertising, public-health and government information, eLearning, broadcast and corporate video — with Filipino alongside it when the campaign is national.

2

Translation & script adaptation

Adaptation into Cebuano by native linguists, not Filipino copy lightly adjusted, with the code-switching into English that Philippine audiences actually use handled deliberately.

3

Subtitling & captions

Cebuano subtitles and captions to go with the recording, so the on-screen text matches the read rather than defaulting to Filipino.

Most common questions

Not reliably. Cebuano and Tagalog are separate Austronesian languages and they are not mutually intelligible, so a Filipino recording is not a weaker version of a Cebuano one — for a monolingual speaker it simply does not land. Many people in the south do follow Filipino because it is the national language and is taught everywhere, but that is a fact about individuals rather than a coverage guarantee. If the south matters to your campaign, record it.
