European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese share a written standard and a great deal of vocabulary, but they do not sound alike, and the difference is not cosmetic. European Portuguese compresses its unstressed vowels — reducing them, and often dropping them altogether — while Brazilian keeps them open. That single habit changes the rhythm of the language, and it is the first thing an ear picks up.

It produces an effect worth knowing before you cast: the intelligibility runs one way more easily than the other. Portuguese audiences follow Brazilian comfortably, helped by decades of exposure to Brazilian music and television. Brazilian audiences generally need more adjustment to European Portuguese, particularly at natural speaking speed. So a Brazilian read is not a safe default for Portugal, and a European read is not a safe default for Brazil — for different reasons in each direction.

Portuguese is the official language of nine countries, and the varieties spoken across Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe sit closer to the European norm than to the Brazilian one. If your content is going to Lusophone Africa, this is usually the right starting point — tell us the market and we cast to it.

Beyond that there are established Portuguese-speaking communities in the United States, Canada, France and Luxembourg, largely of Portuguese origin, for whom the European variety is the familiar one.
