About Italian voice over
Find the right Italian voice for your project
Italy responds to craft. In a market shaped by fashion, food, design and automotive, a voice over is part of the brand's aesthetic, and a flat or non-native Italian read undercuts everything around it.
We produce Italian for luxury and lifestyle, automotive, food and beverage, and eLearning, casting neutral standard Italian for national reach — or regional colour where a story calls for it — with the expressiveness the language is loved for.
Italy has one of the most developed dubbing industries in the world, and it has trained the audience. Foreign film and television have been dubbed into Italian as standard for generations, by voice actors who are known names in their own right. The practical consequence for you is that Italian listeners are unusually good at hearing a poor voice job — the sync, the breath, the emotional match — because they have been listening to expert work their whole lives. A read that would pass unnoticed in a market with a subtitling tradition gets marked as cheap here. It raises the floor rather than the ceiling, and it is worth knowing before you cast on price.
Italian runs roughly a fifth longer than English, and that is a script problem, not a delivery problem. A voice track timed to 30 seconds in English will overrun in Italian, and the usual reflex — asking the voice actor to pick up the pace — produces a read that sounds harried and undercuts whatever the copy is trying to sell. The fix is adapting the copy so it fits at a natural pace. Send us the script with the target duration and we will tell you what has to give before you book the studio.
Standard Italian is a broadcast convention, and the regional accents are a deliberate choice on top of it. The standard is what national advertising, corporate and institutional work uses, and it is what most briefs mean. Roman, Neapolitan and Milanese each carry immediate associations for an Italian listener, and they are effective when the content is tied to a place and distracting when it is not. There is also tu against Lei to settle: it sets the whole tone of the relationship between your brand and the listener, and it cannot be adjusted afterwards. Tell us the audience and we will cast and mark the script for both.
If you are not sure whether your script will fit once it is in Italian, send it over and we will tell you — that assessment is free and it takes us minutes. We will come back with an itemised quote, a note on where the copy needs to give, and a free casting of Italian voices working from your script rather than a demo reel rather than a stock reel. Get an Italian voice over quote, or ask us anything about the market first.
Ask for the audition before you ask for the price, because in Italian it tells you more. Two voice actors with identical demos will handle a long Italian sentence very differently — where they breathe, where they let a clause land, whether they rush the last third to make the timing. None of that shows up in a stock reel cut from other people's projects. We record shortlisted voices auditioned on the copy you plan to use at no cost, and it is the fastest way to find out whether the copy works before you have paid for a session.
Italy is also a market where the same recording often has a second life. A corporate film becomes an internal training module, an advert becomes six social cutdowns, a product video is re-versioned when the range changes. Recording those variants in the same session with the same voice costs a fraction of returning to the studio in three months and discovering the voice actor is unavailable or the rate has changed. Tell us what else is likely and we will quote it as options rather than assumptions.

Most common questions
Will my English script fit the same running time in Italian?
Usually not — Italian runs around a fifth longer, so a 30-second English voice track typically overruns. Asking the voice actor to read faster produces a rushed delivery that damages the message, so we adapt the copy for timing instead, as part of the job. Send us the script and the target duration and we will tell you what needs cutting before you commit to studio time.
Should the Italian script use tu or Lei?
That is a decision about how your brand relates to the listener, not a grammar detail, and it runs through the whole script. Lei is formal and expected in institutional, financial and much corporate work; tu is standard in consumer advertising and anything aimed at a younger audience. It cannot be switched in the edit. Tell us the audience and we will mark the script before recording.
Do we need a regional Italian accent or standard Italian?
Standard Italian works for national reach; regional colour suits character or local work, and we'll recommend based on your audience. Share the brief and we'll confirm in the quote.
Which type of Italian accent do I need?
Neutral Italian works well for national or international content. A northern accent suits audiences in Milan and the north, while a southern accent connects more naturally further south. We can advise on the right fit before anything is recorded.
Are Neapolitan and Sicilian dialects of Italian?
Not exactly. They are often described informally as dialects, but variants like Neapolitan, Sicilian and Sardinian are considered distinct regional languages, with their own grammar and vocabulary rather than simple variations on standard Italian. For most commercial and corporate projects, neutral Italian remains the right default unless the brief specifically calls for regional flavour.
How quickly can an Italian voice-over project be delivered?
Expect 24–48 hours for shorter pieces; larger scripts or busy talent schedules can extend that, so we agree the timeline with you at the outset.
How much does an Italian voice over cost?
Italy has the deepest dubbing tradition in Europe, and one consequence is that Italian voice talent is priced against a professional standard rather than a freelance one — the actors reading your corporate film are often the same people who dub features. What moves your quote is usage: an internal video and a national campaign are the same session at very different prices, because the second buys broadcast rights. Send the script and the media plan for an itemised figure, with our Price Match Promise.
Do you offer Italian dubbing, subtitling and translation as well?
Yes, and Italian audiences are unusually well trained on dubbing quality, having grown up with almost everything foreign dubbed rather than subtitled. Lip-sync work there is judged against a high bar, so we adapt the script to the mouth rather than translating it and hoping.
Why choose GoLocalise for Italian voice over services?
The decision that shapes an Italian read is the one between Lei and tu, and it is not a translator's decision — it sets how the brand sounds to the listener, formal and institutional or direct and familiar. We settle it before the session with a native director, and we will tell you if the English copy has assumed one and needs the other.
What file formats do you deliver Italian voice overs in?
You get your Italian audio in whatever format your workflow needs — WAV, MP3, AIFF and more — at broadcast spec, split into separate files or delivered as a single mix.
Which sectors use Italian voice over the most?
Italian is closely tied to style, craftsmanship and the good life, so it is especially popular for food and drink, fashion, luxury goods, design, furniture and automotive brands. It is also widely used for tourism and hospitality and for the corporate content of Italy's many family-owned manufacturing and export businesses. We match the tone to the brand — expressive and warm for food and lifestyle, refined and understated for luxury.
Can you direct an Italian read for a specific emotional tone?
Yes. Italian is a famously expressive language and the right delivery makes a real difference — an ad for artisan food wants warmth and passion, while a premium fashion or automotive spot may want restraint and cool confidence. Our native-speaking directors shape the performance to your brief, and you sign off the takes before final delivery.
What do you need from us to quote Italian voice over?
Less than people expect: the script, or the draft of it, its total running time or word count, where the recording will be used, and the date you need it by. If the script is not signed off yet, send the draft anyway — we would rather quote on what exists than wait for a version that eats your deadline. A named project manager comes back with an itemised quote, normally within four working hours.
How quickly will we hear back, and who will we be dealing with?
More than half of enquiries get a reply within thirty minutes during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm UK time), and the itemised quote normally follows within four working hours. After that you have one dedicated project manager who owns the job from brief to final file — not a ticket queue, and not a different name on every email. If it is easier, call +44 207 095 5730 and ask for them by name.
We are still pitching and the budget is not signed off. Can we still get an Italian quote?
Yes, and it is one of the commonest reasons people get in touch. Tell us it is for a pitch and you get a figure you can put in front of your own client, itemised so it stands up to being picked apart, with no obligation and no follow-up sales calls if the pitch goes elsewhere. If it lands, the quote still holds and we already know the project.
