About the accent

Australian English is a market, not a novelty accent

Australian English is what people actually use across the country, and for a brand entering the market it is the baseline rather than a flourish. Advertising delivered in a non-local accent tends to be ignored or actively rejected, which makes the accent one of the cheaper things to get right and one of the more expensive to get wrong.

The useful distinction on most briefs is not geography but register. A more urban, neutral read is clear and widely understood, which suits corporate video, training and professional presentation. A broader read, with its flatter vowels and more relaxed intonation, comes across as friendly and approachable, which is why it works for commercials, community and public-information content. Tell us which effect you want and we cast for it.

Australia is also one of the most multilingual countries in the world: around 200 languages are in use, and although there is no official language, Australian English is the language of public life, spoken at home by roughly 73% of the population. Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Italian follow it.

Alongside those are the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, of which the most widely spoken is Kriol — an English-based creole with phonetics of its own, and a distinct language rather than an accent of English. Others still in use include Kalaw Lagaw Ya, Warlpiri and Arrernte.

Typical work is corporate video and internal communications, eLearning and compliance training, advertising for the Australian market, tourism and destination content, mining and resources, and film and television where a character has to sound Australian rather than approximately so.

Getting Australian English right

What to know before you record

Australia is a single-accent market in the sense that matters, and a very multilingual one in every other sense.

Register does more work than region

A neutral urban read for corporate and training, a broader one for commercials and community content. That choice affects how the read lands far more than which city the actor is from.

A British or American read will not pass

Australian audiences notice immediately, and advertising in a non-local accent is the kind of thing that gets ignored rather than politely tolerated.

Script length carries across

Australian English is English, so timings from a UK or US master usually transfer with only light adjustment. Vocabulary is where the adaptation work is, not duration.

Often part of a wider English set

Australian is frequently recorded alongside UK and US versions so one piece of content covers several markets. Give us the full list and we schedule the sessions together.

How we can help

One partner for the whole Australian job

1

Voice over & narration

Native Australian English for corporate video, eLearning, advertising, documentary and IVR, directed for tone, pace and register.

2

Script adaptation

A light pass by a native so UK or US copy reads naturally to an Australian ear rather than sounding imported.

3

Subtitling & captions

Subtitles and captions to go with the recording, so the on-screen text matches the read.

Most common questions

For anything customer-facing, no. Australian audiences hear an approximated accent straight away, and advertising delivered in a non-local accent tends to be tuned out rather than tolerated. We cast native Australian speakers and direct them for the register your content needs.
