Slovenian, or slovenščina, is a South Slavic language and the official language of Slovenia, spoken natively by around 2.5 million people, with recognised speaker communities across neighbouring Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.

For a language spoken by relatively few people, Slovenian is unusually diverse: linguists count more than 40 regional dialects, a density shaped by the country's valleys and alpine terrain. Standard Slovenian, based on the central dialects, is what most audiences expect in corporate, broadcast and eLearning content, but regional colour still matters where the brief calls for it.

Slovenian has a grammatical dual, and almost no other living European language does. Where English and most of its neighbours have singular and plural, Slovenian has a third form used for exactly two of something — two people, two products, two options. It runs through nouns, verbs and adjectives. A translator working from a language without it produces text that is grammatically wrong wherever the count happens to be two, and no amount of good reading fixes it. It is the single most reliable tell of a Slovenian script that was not written by a native.

The market is small and unusually prosperous, which changes the economics rather than the standards. Two million speakers means the audience is reachable with one recording and that the expectation of quality is set by neighbouring markets rather than by scale. Slovenia joined the EU in 2004 and a good deal of the work we see is institutional, pharmaceutical, automotive and retail — categories where a careless read is expensive in a way a small audience does not excuse.

It is also not Slovak, and the two get confused in procurement more often than anyone would like to admit. They are different languages in different countries with different audiences. For a country of its size Slovenia is remarkably dialectally fragmented — the dialect groups are numerous and mutually distant, which is why standard Slovenian carries more weight here than a national standard does in some larger countries. Slovenian word order is flexible and carries emphasis, so where a word sits in the sentence changes what is being stressed rather than merely how it reads. A translation that preserves English order produces sentences that are grammatical and emphasise the wrong thing — the information the line was built around ends up buried. It is subtle, it is invisible to a non-speaker reviewing the text, and it is one of the reasons a native writer outperforms a competent translator here.

Slovenia sits against Austria and Italy and its border regions are genuinely bilingual, with Slovene-speaking communities in both countries and Italian and Hungarian holding official status inside Slovenia.
