About the language

A Gujarati roster you can sit in a room with

Gujarati is the language of the Indian state of Gujarat, and it is written in its own script — related to Devanagari but immediately distinguishable, because it drops the horizontal line that runs along the top of Hindi text.

It is also, unusually among Indian languages, a language with a deep and long-established presence in Britain. The Gujarati community in the UK arrived in two waves: direct migration from Gujarat, and the East African Gujaratis who came from Uganda and Kenya at the end of the 1960s and early 1970s. Leicester and north-west London have been Gujarati centres for half a century.

That shows up directly in our roster: seven of our eight Gujarati voice actors are based in London, the highest proportion of any Indian language we cover. It is not a detail — it changes what we can offer. You can attend the session in person in our Central London studios, direct in the room rather than over a link, and work to European hours with no time difference to manage. For most Indian languages we cannot say that honestly. Here we can, and you can check it yourself by filtering the library above for London-based talent.

It also means Gujarati is a domestic audience language as much as an export one. Public-health campaigns, local-authority communications, banking and utility content aimed at UK audiences use Gujarati for the same reason they use Punjabi and Urdu.

Typical work is corporate video and internal communications, eLearning and compliance training, public-information and NHS campaigns, advertising for Gujarat and for UK Gujarati audiences, banking and insurance material, and broadcast and OTT content for Gujarati-speaking viewers.

Getting Gujarati right

What to know before you record

The unusual thing about Gujarati, for us, is where the talent already is.

Attended sessions are actually possible

Seven of our eight Gujarati voices are in London. If being in the room matters — for tone, for sign-off, for a client who wants to attend — this is one of the few Indian languages where we can offer it without qualification.

Gujarati has its own script

It is related to Devanagari but drops the line across the top, and it is not interchangeable with Hindi text. Supply scripts in Gujarati script so pronunciation and emphasis are unambiguous.

A British audience, not only an Indian one

The UK Gujarati community dates back to the 1960s and 70s. For public-health, council and financial campaigns, Gujarati is a domestic language and the brief should be written as one.

Hindi does not cover it

Gujarati is a separate language, not a Hindi dialect. A Hindi read does not pass as Gujarati to a Gujarati audience, in Gujarat or in Leicester.

Most common questions

Yes, and this is one of the few Indian languages where we can say that without caveats. Seven of our eight Gujarati voice actors are London-based, so sessions run in our Central London studios and you are welcome in the control room. If you would rather not travel, you can direct live over Source-Connect, Zoom or Teams instead.
