Where AI subtitling wins

Where a human subtitler wins
- Accents, names and jargon — automatic tools guess; a native subtitler gets proper nouns, technical terms and regional speech right.
- Reading speed and line breaks — subtitling is condensing meaning to fit the time on screen, breaking lines at natural points. Auto-captions dump raw text and overflow.
- Translated subtitles — machine translation ignores timing and idiom; a human adapts the meaning to fit both the language and the reading speed.
- Accessibility and compliance — SDH, speaker IDs, sound cues and broadcast or WCAG standards need a human to be reliable.
- Poor audio and overlapping speech — noise, crosstalk and multiple speakers are where automatic accuracy collapses.
A simple way to decide
Ask two questions: who will see it, and does it need to be translated or compliant? Internal, single-language, low-stakes video can start with AI. Anything public-facing, translated, or accessibility-related should be human — or at least human-corrected. Plenty of projects use both: AI for the first pass, a subtitler for the finish.
